The house itself is historic and has beautiful woodwork. However we had such low water pressure that I could not wash my hair, and not enough hot water for 2 people to take quick showers. Requested compensation from the property and over a week later no response.

The property was unique, I did not explore as much as I wanted as I do not do well with stairs. But they did have a wheelchair ramp to the front door & one cottage with two separate areas which is where I stayed. I knew of the property when growing up in Kalamazoo in the 60’s - 80’s, so it was a nice gift to myself to stay here. So whether you are from the area or not & you want to stay in a beautiful home built in the 1800’s with all that charm with modern conveniences but not to many to ruin the ambience. I highly recommend you stay at the Henderson Castle for just a weekend or for that special occasion, you will not be disappointed!

My room was outstanding except for 2 safety issues. The tiny bench to stand on to get into bed, would have a hard time being smaller. The bathtub needed a support rail, because it was high off the ground and falling was easy. I did fall getting out of bed, but just scabs and black and blue. I won’t be returning.

Know what you’re getting into

The policies are really strict and a bit frustrating. Also, one of the main attractions, the roof top deck & hot tub, is totally off limits if someone decides they want a massage. Consequently, my wife and I only got a couple minutes in the hot tub the whole trip. Don’t count on bringing anything you want to eat or drink, otherwise you’ll face a steep fine from The castle. That’s just one example of possible up-charges. You’ll find posted signs saying if you do this or that, expect upwards of a thousand dollars charged to your card. We ordered a vegan breakfast for the following morning which was pretty decent, if not a little bland. Can’t say for the non-veg options, but expect some sticker shock. Dinner dishes are roughly $35+ a plate. We had a mix of quality in staff we encountered. The middle aged heavyset bartender we had was a straight up creep, and left-handedly hit on women in front of their husbands. It’s a bummer, because the barroom is truly an incredible little place, and we didn’t care to stay more than the one drink we had. We tried to cash out, but the bartender disappeared for 20mins at a time to make cheese & cracker plates I guess? Most of the other staff were really sweet & easy going. The Tibetan room we stayed in was pretty large & comfy, but peeking into some of the other open rooms, a few seem pretty claustrophobic, so book carefully. Also, I had to force the castle to give us the price guaranteed here on Hotels.

This property was misrepresented. It is nothing but a large run down house with leaky ceilings and faulty wiring. There were extension chords run across my metal headboard. The pipes and ceiling leaked in the bathroom. The grounds were all dug up. There was no wine tour. The rooftop spa area had old plastic wicker furniture without enough cushions. The place was so bad that I left in the middle of the night on my second night. The owner said that he would refund my money for that night and the next, but he didn't.

The worst and strangest experience - ever …

Very old and poorly maintained buildings. The A/C was extremely noisy, permanently at extreme cold and not adjustable- hence we had to cover it with blankets Windows were not tight - and the hotel had permanently placed an old towel to cover the crack Towels were old and placed in a pile in the bathroom No daily housekeeping All indoor areas are dark and poorly lit. Complimentary breakfast was hardly edible - and the coffee was cold and thin We left one day early and checked in at another hotel to get som sleep Don’t go there

The description and photos of this property are misleading. The room description clearly said air conditioning, but my room had none, not even a fan. It was 80 degrees outside. The website says the bar is open at 4. We weren’t able to get drinks until 5:30 because the bartender didn’t show up until then. The wine was open and the bottle was dusty. It was stale and undrinkable. At night, my room was sweltering. I called the front desk. Now answer. Apparently the staff is completely gone at 10pm. I couldn’t stay there for three nights. I had to find another hotel at 11pm. Someone called me the next morning and I told the the situation. I demanded a refund. They told me the owner would call me. I haven’t heard from them 3 days later. Even Orbitz can’t get a response from them.

For an old historical home, it was well kept. The service was very helpful and accommodating with the limited staff available. Easy check in and check out. A pleasant stay all in all.

The Italian room is excellent and good food at nearby restaurants. The Italian room jacuzzi tub was soothing and the shower was unbelievably relaxing. Thank you for a wonderful anniversary weekend!

The room was beautiful but the shower was designed to have to squeegee the floor of bathroom after using. Also, our room had a broken glass door that didnt lock so we felt a little odd being asleep there.

If you have ever seen the movie Beauty and the Beast, and they sing “Be our guest”, this place is not that. Checked in at 6 with nobody to check me in, as they left at 5. Waited around finally got the key. The staff is undertrained and we didn’t feel very welcomed. We didn’t even tour the castle as it felt like we weren’t free to roam around. Nice surprise when they hit my credit card for 2 additional day’s, we of course were made to pay in advance. When I questioned the manager she said it was for our dinner. We didn’t have dinner there. In fact we missed out dinner reservations because of no staff to check us in. She blamed the waitstaff and when I said that the amount is exactly the price of two nights stay, she tried to go into the cost of dinner and the tip. She wanted to call the waitress until I said again that we didn’t have dinner. Breakfast was fine as long as you go ask for it. They closed the bar and dinner at 8:30. They barely had the sidewalks shoveled and they were very icy, the wife slipped, luckily she caught herself. The room was hot as a sauna because of all the drafts and no thermostat to change it. The shower was dangerous and a slip and fall is bound to happen as well as the water just stopped flowing mid shower. I won’t be back and will not be recommended them to family and friends.

Super run down, staff not helpful at all, they sat around the bar all night when i went to ask a questuon. Internet not working, snow and ice everywhere, not cleared for safety. Garbage around property, water bottles, wrappers, cigarettes butts. Unsafe, unable to secure room at night. Deabolt was there but no hole drilled for bolt to be inserted.
