The Neighborhood:
Fashionable Notting Hill is one of London's most iconic neighbourhoods. Best known as host to the world’s second biggest carnival (after Rio’s Mardi Gras) and home to the famous Portobello Road Market, Notting Hill is also a serious destination for culture buffs and those on the hunt for a quintessential London experience. On weekends throughout the year, crowds stroll the two-mile stretch of Portobello Road Market. Colourful terraces are interspersed with antiques shops, buskers, historic pubs and clothing stalls. Straddling the antiques and fashion markets (which are busiest on Saturdays) are the equally old-fashioned and charming produce markets, the calls of fruit and veg sellers helping give the place a Dickensian air. There’s street food of all kinds, from paella and bratwurst to crepes and churros. The markets have a grungier feel past the Westway sports centre, but it is worth persevering for the people-watching and to admire the 100m-long Portobello Wall, which features public artworks commissioned by the local council. They say London is just a collection of villages, and when wandering around Notting Hill the observation rings true. This is a unique neighbourhood with an extraordinary amount of character, and whether ticking off sights or simply exploring randomly, it’s difficult not to fall for its charms. Notting Hill is at its busiest at weekends, when the markets are in full swing, and during these times it’s best to explore on foot. If you manage to visit during the week, when it’s much quieter, cycling can be a great way to get around.
Getting Around:
Sitting west of central London, Notting Hill offers easy access to Heathrow airport and the M4 and M40 motorways. It is also well-served by the Tube network — Notting Hill Gate and Holland Park stations are on the Central line, with trains to Bank. Latimer Road, Ladbroke Grove and Westbourne Park are on the Hammersmith & City and Circle lines with trains to Moorgate. All stations are in Zone 2, except Notting Hill Gate which is in Zone 1.
Useful commuter buses are the No 7 to Oxford Circus; the No 23 to Liverpool Street via Oxford Street; the No 52 to Victoria and the No 452 to Vauxhall via Sloane Square.
Other Things to Note:
Please note: this property has lots of stairs (5 flights) - only book if all party is able.
We kindly request that you read the house rules prior to booking and respect them during your stay. Parties or events of any kind will not be tolerated. Violation of this rule will result in eviction from the property and charges for any damages or additional cleaning required. Thank you in advance for your cooperation!
