The California Condor was a common sight along the Columbia River in Lewis and Clark's day. By the early 1980's, there were only twenty-two left on the face of the planet, all in California.

Today, thanks to a massive effort to re-populate the species via in-captivity pairing, there are some two-hundred members. But their recovery is far from assured.

The Oregon Zoo has undertaken its own recovery effort whose ultimate goal is the re-introduction of the species into the protected wilderness area around the Columbia River Gorge. In short, to bring them home.

For now, they live out their days in a vast, outdoor aviary designed specifically to mimic their habitat in the wild.

If you have never seen one up close before, I urge you to come take a look. They are larger than any flying bird you will ever see, unless you go to Peru. And though black and white practically from head to toe, their plumage shines and reflects the light like dark, polished metal.

If that doesn't suit your fancy, I will tell you that, as with all big birds, if you wait around long enough, they will do something so awe-inspiring that it will take your breath away, and something so goofy that you will laugh out loud.

Either way, you won't be bored for a second.

"I stay in Portland frequently but had not stayed at the Hampton Inn Pearl District before, but it’s going to be where I stay from now on. It’s a beautiful property, right in the heart of the Pearl, surrounded by shopping and dining. The staff are so friendly! My room was immaculate. Best hotel in town for the money. "

Helpful with recommendations from transportations services around the area to local cuisines. 2) NS Tram stop outside hotel. We used the NS tram to visit Powell's book store, the Portland market, various breweries, and others. "This is our favorite hotel when we travel to Portland. It is clean and beautiful and it's right in the middle of downtown. There is a Nordstrom less than a block away and there is a very nice outdoor space with outdoor games and cultural activities just across the street. There are some wonderful restaurants within a few blocks, and the Farmers Market is just a couple of blocks away. We highly recommend The Paramount Hotel in downtown Portland."

"I liked that there was a parking structure was across the street which had pretty good pricing for our overnight stays. The hotel itself felt very safe being that you needed a room key in order to use the escalator to reach the rooms up top. We enjoyed the overall atmosphere as it felt very upscale and unique. All in all, would stay here again ! Thank you for having us Hotel Lucia !"

"The buildings are old but they try to maintain well and the room was clean. I was comfortable to stay over there. I needed microwave and it’s in small kitchen area in gym. Mini fridge is in room and complimentary water bottle was plus! They have a plenty of parking lot with no charge."
