Storybook Northwoods Log Cabin on Lake Superior between Lutsen and Grand Marais

Painted Rock sits perched on a quaint spit of Lake Superior ledge rock, halfway between Lutsen and Grand Marais on the edge of Cascade River State Park.

This historic log cabin has been fully restored to retain all its original charm and history of bygone days, while updated with all the modern amenities. An unusually large Main Room is home to a wood-burning fireplace, dining table, game table, and picture windows that bring the Big Lake indoors in all seasons. The master bedroom has a queen bed, and its private entrance directly onto the deck allows guests to fall asleep to the soothing sound of gently lapping waves. The bathroom is outfitted in spa-like fashion, with an oversized deep-soaker tub and heated floors. With a 2nd bedroom, also outfitted with a queen bed,, Painted Rock can comfortably sleep 4 adults.

Outside, an oversized deck sits just a few steps from the ledge rock shoreline. A pro-style gas grill makes for easy outdoor cooking and gathering. As idyllic as Painted Rock is, the cabin itself is only the beginning …

Painted Rock is situated in the heart of the most legendary and spectacular section of the entire North Shore. Except for a few private parcels of land right along the Lake Superior Shore, Painted Rock essentially sits in the middle of pristine Cascade River State Park. Hundreds of miles of Sawtooth Mountains trails (hiking in the summer, cross-country skiing and snowmobiling in the winter) are accessible right out the front door of the cabin. Cascade Lodge Restaurant & Pub is an easy 1/2-mile walk and features great food, drinks, and frequent live music. A trail leading to Cascade Falls is within a mile of Painted Rock's door! And within a 30-minute drive, everything the North Shore is known for is accessible: world-class hiking, fishing, kayaking, biking trails, skiing, galleries, restaurants, NorthHouse Folk School, and a vibrant live music scene. After all, Painted Rock sits in the heart of Cook County and Grand Marais, which was named by Travel & Leisure magazine as "America's Best Small Lake Town" in 2023!

NorthLight Lodging is a family-operated, boutique hospitality operation consisting of several guest cabins along Lake Superior’s North Shore in northern Minnesota. Ranging in size from 1 to 4+ bedrooms — and all sitting along the easternmost stretch of coveted Cascade Beach Road — NorthLight's properties are located halfway between the grandeur and skiing of the Lutsen Mountains and the charming harbor town of Grand Marais. Each cabin is nestled right along the lakeshore and has been curated with painstaking attention to detail. Our goal in designing, crafting, and appointing our cabins is to embody all the subtle enchantment of the North Shore region we so love. We aspire to offer incomparably welcoming spaces — cared for with meticulous attention to detail — that foster inspiration, connection, and wonder for all who visit.

This rustic log cabin is exactly how they show it in the photos. Its everything we were looking for. If your looking for cozy fires in a wood fireplace or a campfire on the rocks by the lake, or simply just want to listen to the waves, this is tge place to beis the place to be

We chose Painted Rock because we love rustic lake cabins and it did not disappoint. It has an old cabin look, but had all the updates and amenities to make it very comfortable and functional. The setting right on the Lake Superior shoreline was spectacular! We loved just sitting on the deck in the comfortable Adirondack chairs and just taking in the view!

Painted Rock was delightful. I loved the simplicity of the decor, and the thoughtfulness that went into each amenity. There were so many details that kept adding to the stay: wool blankets, fireplace, the kitchen appliances (super fun!), the tea, the VIEWS of the water, the privacy of the location (neighbors are nearby but not visible), the kitchen well-supplied (but simply) with tools, sharp knives to work with!, beautiful and functional tub/shower (great water pressure!), and the hummingbird feeder. The property is well cared for and maintained. We really enjoyed our stay - would definitely choose Painted Rock again for an anniversary getaway!

It’s the most perfect vrbo we’ve rented and we’ve stayed in some spectacular places. The location, the history of the cabin and the perfection of each piece of furniture, appliance and textile is unbeatable. Only one thing could be better: that we’d stay longer!

Exactly what we were looking for. Relaxing cozy place to disconnect and enjoy the north shore. Everything we needed, nothing more. Loved listening to the radio, putting together a puzzle and having a fire in the fireplace while eating the huge waves hit the rocks on the shore. Loved being close to the awesome food at Cascade Lodge as well as trips to Lutsen, Grand Marais, and the Gunflint Trail. Definitely look forward to staying again!

My husband, college bound daughter and I enjoyed an absolutely delightful stay at Painted Rock cabin this past August. We wanted a quiet vacation of reading, relaxing and enjoying the North Shore. This place checked all the boxes! The cabin was cozy, comfortable, immaculate and welcoming. The hosts have done an exceptional job renovating this historic cabin down to each little detail. Thank you for a perfect place to stay. We can’t wait to go back.
