"This hotel seems to be a hidden gem. It was amazing. Lots of history in the place, it was like staying in a museum. You could spend a day just exploring the hotel. People were incredible, friendly, helpful, I felt like a friend and not just a guest. The room I had was well appointed, with the usual, things. "The staff were extremely helpful and polite. The hotel is clean and well maintained. The only issue I had with the room is that the bathroom mirror is so old, some of the silver backing is showing through. The beds were very comfortable. Alicia at the bar was also great helping me come up with ideas to spend the last day in SF with my daughter."

"The rooms are a little too dated. The room was very stuffy so we had to open Windows and there was no screens. There are not enough Outlets in the room. Also I am 5 ft 2 and it was very difficult for me to climb up into the bed. I know a lot of it has to do with the charm but some updates would make it more comfortable."

"I really liked the hotel and staff. Everyone is enthusiastic, helpful and courteous. The hotel is clean and well-appointed but in the midst of updating. Only one working elevator when we were there but that didn’t cause any undue delays for us. I would recommend adding a spare blanket to the closet for guests that might feel the need for a bit of extra warmth at night or just some added heft to the bedding. Super location to many venues and superb fine dining in downtown SF."

What does need to be stated is the safety factor - it is surrounded by homeless and drug addicts. We reserved a parking garage a few blocks away on Eddy and we literally walked through urine and active drug use happening on the sidewalks - syringes being held like cigarettes. "Dated , dirty , focused on monetization and not on guest experience. But this may be the trend in union square, all these places are old and maintained enough to keep going. I think for more luxurious , guest oriented experience , there are other areas of San Francisco , but are pricier as expected. So I guess for the money this place wasn’t horrible."
