Upon arrival, it was immediately clear that the property was not as advertised. For the premium price paid, the experience was extremely disappointing.
The apartment had a strong, unpleasant odor from the moment we entered, which posed a health risk for my mother who has asthma. Despite reporting this to VRBO, the concern was dismissed.
The listing stated the apartment could accommodate up to five people, yet it only had one double bed and one twin bed. The only other option was a couch with pull-out leg rests,not even a proper sofa bed,which my 60-year-old father had to use.
The unit itself was in poor condition:
The toilet seat was broken and would detach when used. The bathroom ceiling and door hinges were covered in mold. The walls throughout the apartment were scratched and scuffed. The couches and chairs were badly stained. The towels provided had hair on them.
One of the most alarming issues occurred when a fire alarm went off at 5:30 a.m. During the evacuation, the host was unreachable, there was no security presence, and no building management available to assist. I had to call the fire department myself to resolve the situation.
The only redeeming qualities were the clean bed linens and the convenient location.
Attempts to contact the host upon arrival went unanswered. Calls and emails to VRBO led nowhere; although they claimed they would investigate, I never received any updates or follow-up. The lack of professionalism has been astounding.
