An American white pelican, one of the biggest birds you can observe in North America with its nine-foot wingspan, comes home to roost at 8:45 pm on the longest day of the year at St. Vrain State Park in Longmont, Colorado. Pelicans breed every summer on this inland prairie reservoir with a backdrop of the Rocky Mountains. This Colorado state park is right next to I25, so it can appear to be noisy and not very "naturey." But when you put your back to the highway and take a breath, you can hear birds, watch fish jump, smell campfires, and even watch bald eagles find their dinner. I love fishing and truly enjoy being able to "get away" only 15 minutes from my house.
