  • #TroveOn Yes, Monteriggioni just might be the quintessential walled medieval village in Tuscany. It's small enough to perhaps be called "cute" but you won't catch me using this term. Monteriggioni began as a border fortress built on a round hill by Sienna against the Florentines. It is famous for the intact defensive structure that held up against repeated Florentine attacks in the 11th century; its 10 meter high walls and 14 towers can still be seen for miles around. Monteriggioni has been featured in movies as a typical medieval village. The village is slightly elliptical in shape with two gates (a third has been plugged). The major gate tourists will use when coming from the parking lot, Porta Franca, owes its name to the Via Francigena--Monteriggione was a major stop on the pilgrimage trail from Cantebury to Rome. The Romanesque Church of Santa Maria Assunta will offer assistance with housing for modern pilgrims traveling the Francigena pilgrimage route. Monteriggioni was a sleepy village of farmers and sheep herders as late as the 1960's. Today it exists entirely for tourists and pilgrims. You'll find wine shops, a tasting room, restaurants and hotels in the small village. This is not neccessarily a disadvantage, although some times it's nice to see some locals puttering about once in a while. Where is Monteriggioni? Monteriggioni is located in the province of Siena, 14km to the northwest of Siena (54km from Florence). While it can be done as a day trip from Siena, you might be better off staying the night--Monteriggioni is much more evocative when the tourists leave late in the afternoon and you can sit in a courtyard sipping a glass of Chianti. Monteriggioni is surrounded by vineyards, and is known for its wine production.

Tuscan Villa of our Dreams!

For years we had been wanting to rent a villa in the heart of Tuscany and share it with a group of friends… Le Canterie provided the perfect experience: ideal location, stunning surroundings, pampered service, and wonderful amenities. Lucia & Erminio are the most charming hosts, they employ such attentive staff, their food was 5 star, but most importantly they delivered our Dream Vacation overflowing with such loving memories. They make you feel like family rather than just guests by sharing their home and their own Tuscan Dream with you. I will forever be grateful to them.

Tres bon séjour

Accueil fantastique de Lucia et son mari incroyablement gentils et arrangeants. Nous avons adoré la piscine et la vue sur la campagne environnante. Il y a un restaurant sur place où nous avons dîné quasiment tous les soirs, et nous voulions encore y passer quelques nuits pour finir la carte :) Le seul petit bémol est l'équipement de la cuisine extérieure un peu light pour un grand groupe. Ce lieu est parfait pour un groupe d'ami ou une grande famille on le recommande tous !

Picturesque Villa

A beautiful villa with wonderful hosts. Highly recommend dining at the villa. The food is delicious and the views are breathtaking. Recommend having a car for the duration of your stay.

Memorable stay at this beautiful agriturismo!

Our group of 5 couples & an infant stayed at this beautiful agriturismo to attend a nearby wedding. Lucia, Ermino and their wonderful staff were incredible. They made us feel so at home & like we'd made new friends. Our group got in the routine of meeting on the patio for a glass of wine or a spritz while enjoying the beautiful sunsets before dinner. And we loved waking up to the smell of delicious breakfast breads baking. We hosted a couple of dinner parties for family and friends in who were in the area for the same wedding, (for 20 people one night, then 30 people), and everyone was impressed with the service, delicious food, and beautiful setting. Many said it was a special experience they would never forget. I completely agree! We all had our own unique accommodations. Everyone was very comfortable and happy with their apartment. Our courtyards were along the same walkway like we had our own little charming village. We enjoyed venturing out to nearby towns each day, then hanging out at the pool in the late afternoon before our evening festivities. It was truly perfect. If you plan to stay in this area, Le Canterie is the place to be.
