"The Royal Oak has a wonderful location in a quiet village setting and visitors can expect a relaxing change of pace. The countryside around is spectacular for England and the people are without exception friendly and helpful. I'm perhaps biased because my family lived in Gt Ayton in the early 19th Century and although I was born in North Yorkshire today, as a visiting southerner it's very much my home ground. "Really great find. Excellent food and a great bar. Staff were just brilliant, Charlotte especially. Wonderful, very quiet and well appointed. Just great to sit in the main room with a book and admire the view. We did the taxi to Durham Cathedral just to complete our day."
