  • One of the northernmost towns along the coast in North Carolina, Duck is an idyllic town on the shores of the Currituck Sound.  This shot was taken from the town's boardwalk while looking West over the sounds. It is advisable to visit the location in Winter as that is off season - so you can spend more time taking in the beauty of the North Carolina coastline and also sunsets are usually much more picturesque around the time owing to the cooler temperatures and lower amount of atmospheric haze.

Plenty of things around Duck to see. Further north, there is the Currituck Lighthouse where you can climb the steps to the top of the lighthouse. North of Corolla, there is an area where you can drive along the coast on the sand - 4X4s a must. Here you can spot some Spanish Mustangs, horses out in the wild. If you're lucky, you can spot them running along the beach in the surf. I'd recommend taking a tour through the Corolla Wild Horse Fund - the money from the tours is used to help the wild horses in every which way possible and the staff are knowledgeable and friendly.

Keep Looking

As a frequent VRBO renter and usually highly rated guest let me start by saying I'm not a complainer and expect some inconvenience when renting. However, this place is low on my list of experiences. The AC did not work and it was extremely hot the week we were there, the master shower did not drain at all leaving you standing in dirty water and both refrigerators did not function properly. There were other smaller issues that tend to make a difference in one's comfort but these were the major inconveniences that convinced us to leave a day early. While the Realty company did their best to address our issues, it was ultimately the owner's responsibility to set things right. They refused. My recommendation to others is to keep looking, there are plenty of other rentals to be had in the Outer Banks. I've rented three other places over the years in this area and had no issues. Let me emphasize this is not a reflection on Outer Banks Blue (the rental company) but rather specifically on the property Salty Bunker.

What A Disappointment

Everything about our first visit to OBX was great, except this property. We were incredibly disappointed with our stay at The Salty Bunker. The main reason we booked this house was because it was advertised as having a private pool and outdoor space, but the pool was absolutely filthy—completely unusable. It was obvious it hadn't been cleaned or maintained in quite some time. Because of that, we couldn’t enjoy the patio or backyard at all, which was a huge letdown considering it was one of the main advertised features. I will take full ownership that completely missed the sentence in contract that stated the pool was open May 2-October 12. I never would have booked this rental and don’t think they should list this property with a private pool during “off season use”, that is deceiving to the people renting the property. Regardless of that oversight on my part, it was unacceptable for the pool to be in the filthy condition it was in- who wants to sit on the patio or in the backyard looking at that? We reached out to the host to discuss the issue and ask if they would consider a discounted rate, given that a big part of what was advertised was in unacceptable condition. Unfortunately, they were completely uncooperative and unwilling to work with us on any kind of adjustment.Overall, this was a huge disappointment for my family. I would not recommend this property unless the owners keep up with the pool maintenance in the off season.

Family friendly beach house

Couldn’t have asked for a better place to stay. We had two families stay, one with an infant and one with a 3year old and it was the perfect amount of space for them to play and us to still hang out all together. Our weather wasn’t always the best but we were able to enjoy the pool everyday which is a short walk to the backyard from the very relaxing screened in porch. We will definitely be trying to book here again for our future trips!

Quick getaway

Salty bunker was the perfect house for our quick 5 day getaway. This charming 3 bedroom 2 bathroom house was just the right size for my family. Great location and we absolutely loved the backyard pool and sitting areas. Will definitely visit again.
