Shepherds Retreat - Self catering accommodation sleeping 4 guests in 2 bedrooms

  • Shepherds Retreat, situated on the foundations of Hadrian's Wall and set in wonderful open countryside provides a welcoming, warm and friendly place to stay. The traditional stone built property is attached to the 18th Century Farmhouse and was originally an outbuilding. We renovated the building in 2007 and transformed it into the contemporary property you see today, retaining a lot of the original features.

    Set in the heart of Hadrian's Wall Country and Northumberland National Park; home to England's cleanest rivers, clearest air and darkest skies, the property has everything you need for a perfect break.

    There are two well sized double bedded bedrooms, which incorporate some of the original features, such as roof beams and stone walls. Each bedroom has ensuite shower facilities.

    The lounge is light and airy. The kitchen is fully equipped with an upright fridge / freezer, electric double oven, washing machine, dishwasher and a microwave.

    If you are looking for a relaxing or active break at any time of the year in England's Border Country, Shepherds Retreat is ideally situated to meet your needs. We will make you very welcome and ensure your stay is memorable.

Comfort and luxury!

Upon opening the front door we felt embraced by warmth and comfort, and a very warm welcome to Shepherds Retreat at Carraw Farm. The kitchen is extremely well equipped, the sitting room very comfortable, and the ensuite bedrooms luxurious and also well equipped. We would definitely recommend this as it is on the AD122 bus route which makes most of Hadrians Wall accessible.

A great place to stay

Shepherd’s Retreat at Carraw is the perfect place to stay when visiting Northumberland. A home from home on Hadrian’s Wall with spectacular views, really well equipped and with welcoming hosts on site. One of the best holidays we have ever had in the UK.

A lovely place to stay to visit Hadrian's Wall

A lovely cottage with tremendous views, and a great location to visit the sites along Hadrian's Wall. The bed was comfortable and the linen and towels were good quality. The kitchen was very well equipped and the place was spotlessly clean. And the flowers and home made cake were a super touch.

This is an excellent place to stay. Very clean and comfortable. The hosts left such nice welcoming items, including a delicious lemon cake which was much appreciated. The views out the back are amazing. The bedrooms were so beautiful, with their old beams and stonework. Really a favorite. Looking forward to returning.

Perfect Retreat

Stayed at Carraw and Vista View many times over the years but first trip to Shepherds Retreat. It did not disappoint. Had fantastic stay. Leah and Kevin are great hosts. Everything was outstanding including the weather.

Beautiful cottage

We had a lovely stay at the Shepherds retreat for the bank holiday weekend. The location is surprisingly quiet but there are plenty of places to eat only a short drive away. The views are incredible and the cottage is on the Hadrians wall walk. We were very grateful for the welcome hamper and the farmhouse breakfast. Thank you for a lovely weekend!

Beautiful place, perfect location

We loved staying here, really well appointed, excellent standard and very comfortable. The cottage is in a great location to see Hadrians Wall. The views were staggering. We will definitely be back. Lemon Drizzle cake was delicious thank you Leah.

Valentines Weekend

This is a beautiful place to stay. Kevin & Leah are amazing hosts and can’t do enough for you. Lots of special little touches - a fantastic cake & very much appreciated welcome pack greeted us when we checked in. Everything you could possible need is all available and at the highest standard. The views are amazing and make you totally relax. We strongly recommend Carraw and can’t wait to go back and stay.

Great location for visiting Hadrian’s Wall

Shepherd’s Retreat is in a wonderful location for visiting Hadrian’s Wall and the Roman forts of Vindolanda and Housesteads. The views from the house are beautiful and the house is small but comfortable and in a very peaceful location. The kitchen is well stocked and the owners leave some nice welcome items to greet you. The information given to you in advance is very detailed and helpful.

Truly relaxing and comfortable stay at the Shepherd’s Retreat

Our 3 night stay was perfect in every way. Leah and Kevin had thought of everything guests would need and more. The basket of locally produced goodies and the homemade cake made us feel so welcome. We were lucky with warm and sunny weather, so we enjoyed our tea and cake in the garden. There is a wealth of local guides and maps and a good range of dvds. We wholeheartedly recommend the Shepherd’s Retreat.

Break with friends

Shepherd’s Retreat was a beautiful place to base ourselves for exploring the local area. We immediately felt at home - the cottage was very clean and comfortable and there was even a lovely cake waiting for us in the kitchen. Leah was very helpful , offering us advice about the best ways to explore around and about and even thinking to knock on the door when the Northern Lights made an appearance - an added bonus during the week. We needed more time to see this stunning part of the country and would love to visit again.

Short Break

Spent two nights in this delightful cottage with spectacular views of the Northumberland countryside. The hosts are helpful but not intrusive with a welcome pack a lovely surprise. The cottage itself is well equipped and catered for all your needs. We enjoyed having breakfast in the lovely walled garden listening to the birds and sheep. Hadrian's wall and other sites a short distance away so perfectly located for seeing the sites. We would love to return.

Great short stay at the Shepherds Retreat. Just my daughter and I and we had tons of space with very comfortable beds. It’s quite close to the road but you never notice once you’re inside. It is right in the heart of Hadrian’s Wall country and what a treat to be able to head just a few minutes down the road and be at Vindolanda, amazing.The owners left a lovely cake for us, which my daughter enjoyed (I’m gf so I was a bit jealous but appreciated the kindness). Being able to do a load of laundry was a great bonus at that point in our adventure. And I appreciated the instruction manuals- very helpful.The kitchen is well stocked for cooking but there are good dining options in the area, we really enjoyed the County Motel in Hexham. Check in and out were by the instructions provided. I’d libe to come back sometime to explore more of the wall.

Not Disappointed.

We found the Shepherds Retreat all we wanted - very clean and comfortable, with a high standard of furnishing and decor and kitchen. It was lovely and the lemon drizzle cake Leak left for us was delicious. We really felt they had the comforts of the visitor in mind.The location on Hadrian's Wall near Vindolanda and Housesteads and not far from Hexham was good. The views from the cottage and patio were stunning. All in all a great choice. Thank you!

Comfortable cottage in great location

We booked the cottage for a long weekend, whilst attending a national cycling event near Hexham. The cottage was perfect for our group of three adults, providing us with two double bedrooms, both with ensuite facilities. The cottage was clean, warm and well equipped for our stay and the location was fantastic for walks on Hadrians Wall and only a fifteen minute drive to Hexham. The owner was very accommodating to our needs and generously provided a welcome pack of essentials plus a homemade cake. The owner's website also had a lot of useful information. We would certainly recommend Shepherd's Retreat to anyone visiting the area.

Wonderful property with views close to Hadrian's wall

The cottage is a cosy annexe to the main house and has everything you could need. The owners live right next door and are excellent hosts, with home-made cake waiting for me on arrival. I'd travelled to the Northumberland coast for a wedding and stopped here on my way back south. It makes an excellent base for seeing parts of Hadrian's wall, as well as Hexham. With chickens (and a solitary rabbit) in the garden and lambs in the field, it makes a great place to chill with a book after a day of sightseeing/walking. I would definitely recommend it.
