"Hotel is directly opposite where you check in, which is The George pub. No staff being readily available in the building was a little inconvenient as we had a few confusing moments with the room temperature and couldn’t change it. Also, tv remote was broken so was difficult to navigate using it, but having no main reception in the building meant you couldn’t just pop and get a replacement! But it was very clean, large wet room and not too much trouble to navigate once inside. Would stay again,...

"I stay in hotels every week for work, and this was the best stay I have ever had. Every member of staff was genuinely friendly and welcoming. The food was delicious, the bed was incredibly comfortable, and the whole experience was excellent from start to finish. I could go on, but honestly, just stay here. You will not regret it."

"Not sure how its a 4-star. Anyway, the restaurant was really good, great food (but a bit heavy on cheese and light on mushrooms in the risotto) and wine. Special recognition for Tilly, who was very attentive. The fire alarm went off 12 times in the night, really? The room, No. 17, was way too hot, maybe that's what triggered the alarm? The heated towel rail was on full and I couldn't see how to turn it off. The bathroom extractor fan ran on for ages."

"Heating in the initial room was not able to be turned on. No equivalent room was available. I was told I would have to pay for an upgrade or stay in a freezing cold room. Finally, 2 hours later, I was advised I would be moved to another room at no additional cost. This should have been athe immediate and unquestioning solution. Very disappointing. "The most likeable thing about this hotel is the staff. Lovey people, went out of their way to make me comfortable. The hotel could definitely do with an upgrade though, especially for business travel stays. Brilliant for on site parking. "

"Quirky and incredibly well designed hotel! It can’t be easy remodeling a +500 year old hotel. Location was perfect! Downtown Colchester, walkable to shops and restaurants. Modern amenities, fabulous decor, great location and incredible customer service! I really enjoyed staying in the historic hotel."
