[A Fusion of Old and New Landmarks] The design concept for this facility is the “tall lantern” and “Ikesu.” On Tempozan—once Japan’s lowest mountain—a tall lantern (lighthouse) was erected long ago to serve as a navigational marker for ships, and Japan’s oldest aquarium also supplied fish to the market during economic downturns. Today, the giant Ferris wheel has taken on that role, becoming a symbol of the area. Here, home to “Kaiyukan”—one of the world’s largest aquariums—we have brought about a collaboration between the old and the new.
