The pods are really nice, I much prefer it to the more standard bunk-bed style hostel format. Keep in mind, the lockers in the 6-bed dormitories are very small. I could not fit my small backpack into it. Everyone just trusted each other to keep out, but there's space for true valuables like a laptop, passport, etc. Bring your own lock as they do not provide any. The pods themselves do not lock, but the doors have a magnetic-type pull that keeps them tightly shut. The fan in the pod is quite loud, which I LOVED because it acted as white noise to the dorm/hallway noise. I slept the best I ever have in a hostel. I only wish there was a way to adjust the fan more, I was quite hot some nights and freezing other nights. Ability to adjust your individual pod (beyond off or on fan) would be excellent.
The location can't be beat, quick walk to the subway and Central Park is across the street. It was very easy to get anywhere I wanted.
I did end up accidentally leaving behind a bag of toiletries which contained at least $150~ worth of makeup, and the hostel was not willing to arrange shipping even if I paid upfront. Not necessarily docking them for it, it was my mistake, but just something to note and make sure you really ensure you have everything. They did offer to hold it for me for someone to pick up, but I had no one local to get it for me and I was already out of the state so it was a total loss.
Overall, I would recommend Kama Central Park for an affordable NYC stay!
