The Sunset Cabin is located on 40 acres of private property adjacent to the Monteverde Cloud Forest Reserve and contiguous with more than 110,000 acres of protected forest. Well removed from the bustle of Monteverde, Cerro Plano and Santa Elena, you can expect a peaceful experience here—going to sleep to the sounds of katydids, cicadas, and frogs and waking up to chorusing black-bellied wood quail, duetting gray-breasted wood wrens and the likelihood of seeing coatis, agoutis, and a diversity of animal life.
The Cabin
The cabin is ideal for people who appreciate the natural world and simple living. It’s rustic, but includes all the basic amenities so that you can have an authentic experience in the Costa Rican cloud forest.
The main cabin includes the kitchen, dining and living area on the first floor and a sleeping loft with one full bed upstairs. In the rear of the cabin, a new addition (2018) includes a large bathroom, another bedroom with a twin bed and a second floor sleeping area with two beds (1 full, 1 twin). The two sets of stairs to the second floor are steep and may not be suitable for young children or older adults. The cabin can comfortably accommodate six people (surcharge of $15 for more than four adults). WiFi is available, but slow.
A porch extends along the front and north side of the cabin, providing spectacular views into the canopy, the Gulf of Nicoya and views to the northwest. Agoutis and coatimundis are often seen on the front lawn, which is steep, and not suitable for croquet.
The cabin is located at the end a steep 600-foot driveway, making 4WD or All-Wheel Drive important. During extremely wet conditions, our property manager can assist you and help get you and your belongings to the cabin.
Property
There are three houses on the 40 acres, none of which is in view of the others and providing a very private experience.
Our land includes a mix of primary cloud forest and open clearings, which offer excellent opportunities viewing of wildlife. White-faced monkeys, coatis, and agoutis are all commonly seen on our land, and several cloud forest specialists, including resplendent quetzals and black guans, are also frequently seen near the cabin. Less common species, like brocket deer, ocelots, and margays, are occasionally spotted.
Trails
A network of maintained trails can be accessed near the cabin. The trail system is open only to guests of the three houses and offers the opportunity to experience the cloud forest on your own.
