The Area Deal is steeped in history having not one but three castles built by Henry VIII, namely Deal, Walmer and Sandown. The first two are English Heritage sites and Sandown (only a few stones remain) is on the cycle path that follows the coast path. Deal has the town motto of 'Adjuvate Advenas' which for those not familiar with Latin is translated into " Befriend a Stranger" - perfect for those wanting to be made welcome on a self catering holiday to Deal or short break!
For the historians Deal is mentioned in the Doomsday book, but evidence suggests its history goes back much further. Julius Caesar is said to have landed upon the Deal & Walmer coast in 55 and 54 BC. Deal is one of the Cinque Ports and has been important in the defences of south east England throughout history. With a coastline that was permanently exposed to potential attack it was no wonder that Deal played such an important role.
There is something for everyone in Deal, fantastic and often quirky independent shops, markets, delicatessens, pubs, restaurants and cafes, together with a wonderful weekly bric-a-brac and food market. The actual town centre is pedestrianised which makes it an ideal place to wander and explore. Deal has a long Pier which was named Pier of the Year in 2008 and boasts an award-winning café and restaurant, whilst the beach is perfect for soaking up the coastal scenery. Deal is a true Georgian town with winding streets and lovely promenade.
Other things to do in Deal include the Time Ball Tower Museum, which is a Semaphore Tower and was used to pass messages along the East Coast to warn of smugglers. This museum contains many curious items and is well worth a visit. The Deal Maritime and Local History Museum is also very interesting as it tells the full historical story of this seaside town. The Deal Memorial Bandstand is a remembrance of the bombing of Deal's Royal Marines School of Music in 1989. The bandstand is in regular use and there are free concerts from May to September on Sunday afternoons.
Deal and Walmer have excellent bars, cafes and restaurants to choose from, including an award winning restaurant at the end of the pier. Within a 2 minute walk of the house is the best fish and chip shop in the country!
For golfers, try your skills on a links course and Deal has plenty to offer; Walmer and Kingsdown Golf Links, Royal St George's in Sandwich, and Royal Cinque Ports in Deal are all within an easy reach.
For sailing enthusiasts, the nearby Downs Sailing Club holds events suitable for novices and experienced sailors, throughout the season.
For swimmers who don't like the seawater, a visit with the family to Tides Leisure Centre, a minute's drive away, is a must, including numerous flumes, slides and Jacuzzi's.
Fishing need not just be nipping down to the beach front for the catch of the day off the local fisherman, why not bring your rod and bait and cast off from the pier or beach yourself?
Plus don't forget your passport! France can easily be seen on a clear day and via Dover, a day trip (21 miles) to our near neighbour is easily do-able! Deal is a unique place, where coast meets country, country meets the town and England meets the Continent. Whatever the time of year, it's a great spot to savour some quality time and glimpse life from a bygone era.
You'll find a wealth of independent, quirky shops open all year round, and every Saturday, in the centre of town, a lively market with stalls selling everything from antiques through to cheese and wine. For generations, artists, designers, writers and musicians have been inspired by the beautiful coastline, chalk cliffs, stunning countryside, smugglers' alleyways, historical heritage and nautical charisma. There's an energetic arts scene with a host of independent galleries, exhibitions and events, whatever the time of year, there's always something exciting happening. Regardless of whether you are after a casual bite or a full dining experience, Deal's choices of eateries will appeal to all tastes and appetites. Dozens of pubs, cafes and restaurants are making the most of their prime location in the Garden of England using seasonal and locally sourced ingredients including fresh seafood from the surrounding shores.

Perfect seaside getaway
We had a wonderful weekend at Glen Hill as a big group of 15. Great access to the sea and Deal, with amazing gardens. The house is lovely and full of character. The Keepers Cottage’s team were incredibly helpful and quick to respond to any requests. Highly recommend!

Absolutely perfect!
We had the most incredible weekend staying here, the photos do not do the house justice with quite how incredible it is!
It really has everything you could need and the team were beyond accommodating with early/late check out and answering any questions.
The beds were comfortable, the kitchen was stocked with everything you could possibly need.
The only feedback we could think of is to have a little more freezer space and to have mini shampoo & conditioner in the bathrooms.
The perfect stay!

A lovely house and garden in a wonderful location
This is an unusual house with many passages, nooks and crannies and a beautiful garden in a wonderful location. There was plenty to do for all of us from 2 years old to 70 … football, tennis, trampolining, croquet and hide and seek. The beach is only a ten minute walk away and there are lots of places a short drive away. We all enjoyed our stay at Glen Hill.

A great place to enjoy with friends or family.
A large rambling property for any group that wants space without standing on ceremony. Gardens fantastic and as there were 6 aged 13 or less it could not have been better for them. A reasonable walk to the sea and though no-one would risk a swim, kite flying was just right.

Brilliant house for large gathering
We booked this large rambling historic house for a family gathering of 18, including small children, and it was perfect. The house itself is very interesting and characterful with an interesting history. It is well equipped with just about everything you could need - the piano was nice to have, lots of games, books, TV with lots of channels, hi-fi system, smart speakers in many of the rooms. The weather was good so we enjoyed eating outside, and tennis on the tennis court (lots of rackets provided), football goals for kids games, a croquet set. The grounds are picturesque with nice views and well kept by gardeners who appeared one day. Keepers Cottages were very good at making sure everything was going smoothly, and responded quickly to the only problem we had (a leaking sink waste pipe).

spacious house, enormous garden, peaceful location next to Walmer castle, expectations exceeded
A superb holiday for our party of 15 plus a dog. Kids loved trampolining, tennis, croquet, with a football goal included while adults enjoyed the terrace and amazing gardens which are huge, extending in 3 directions from the house. The rooms and bedrooms are spacious, with character and comforts. Part of the character is it's age but everything worked fine. A bit more fridge/freezer capacity would be good. The view from the top floor across to the castle and sea beyond is stunning. You can walk from the driveway to the beach side path in a few minutes or up onto the clifftop. Ample opportunities for dog walking, jogging, etc. Parking was relatively easy by Deal beach (in August), but we'd recommend a 10 minute drive to St. Margaret's Bay - great for body boarding and swimming near high tide for all ages. But pay for parking by phone before you go (no signal/French network only!) or take plenty of cash

Amazing house
The house is amazing, perfect location right next to a castle. The grounds are wonderful. It's the ideal location for a large group. Also kids will love the "Harry Potter" style of the stairs and nooks and crannies in the house.
Points of attention:
- We found a piece of glass on the bedroom floor, reported it to Keepers Cottages. Fortunately, no injuries.
- A plumber came unannounced to the house to fix the downstairs toilet which was not working when we arrived. After he left, it still did not work.
- A gardener also came unannounced to the house at 8am on Friday morning. He told us he's been doing that every week for many years.
- Some of the email communication was frustrating.
Generally though, the above comments are minor compared to the amazing property!

À beautiful, spacious, period house with stung well kept gardens.
Glen House is a great place to stay. It is full of character with large spacious rooms and there was room for all of us, 10adults, 6 children and 2 babies. The main house is grand and both the Annexe and flat are very comfortable. The gardens are a delight, the children absolutely loved the large lawn and the gravel pathways at the bottom. A place to return to as we had only a brief weekend.
Thank you Keepers Cottage for your efficiency, from booking to our stay was seamless and everyone so pleasant.

Needs some TLC
The property is over looking the sea and Windsor castle in fairly well kept grounds so the location is good. Close to Deal and about 20 mins walk to the beach with small children.
Things inside the property need some TLC, 2 of the children’s beds have broken slats., the door knob to the master room falls off and only one door to the balcony is accessible as there is only one key to one door. The bbq was disgusting, small old and rusty with previous users debris and old pork chop bones. The downstairs WC flush away was hit and miss. To be fair to the company they sent someone to fix this once I told them I had a disabled daughter who needed to use it , otherwise I think they would have just said do not use it use the other WC’S
Two of the Wc lids slip to one side when you sit on them which is also not great.
The rest of the house was generally charming with old features and characteristic querk’s
We went for my husbands 70th with family and had specifically requested use of the bbq as we had 16 there for a Sunday bbq , they have not taken our complaint seriously and it was a pain having to to do everything in the oven last minute.
Do my final comment is Shape up , could do better.

Gothic splendour on the Kent coast
As a large party of four adults and eight teenagers, we found Glen Hill pretty much ideal. The house itself is sprawling and quirky with multiple staircases and even an organ room; the grounds are vast, with tennis court, trampoline, and plenty of places for teens to squirrel themselves away. Accommodation is generous and actually rather better (in terms of usable beds) than the website suggests.
A couple of caveats. First, it’s not the place to go if you want wow interiors: everything is perfectly serviceable and clean, but a little shabby and dated. Second, the number of bathrooms is quite tight for a houseful, and they’re fairly Spartan, especially in terms of water pressure!
This said, it’s a great location for a dog-friendly family break.

A fantastic house and grounds.
We stayed as a family with children and grandparents and couldn’t have asked for more. The house was beautiful and well stocked with books and games for all ages. Superb grounds with well kept gardens and space for all of us to play and relax when not out exploring the local area. Just a 10 minute walk to the sea, the local stony beach was empty and felt like our own personal space. Would love to go back some time and can highly recommend the property and service we received.
