These two semi-detached holiday cottages are situated approximately 0.5 miles off the public road up a private farm track, next to the owners’ home and small working farm in a very quiet, peaceful location, which is ideal for secluded retreats or as a central touring base to explore Dumfries & Galloway. The cottages are similar in style and design and Rose Cottage (ref 28176) is a restored barn conversion consisting of a traditional granite byre with an architect designed larch clad extension featuring a welcoming wood burner. They are located near the Solway Coast and close to the world-class ‘7 Stanes’ mountain bike facility at nearby Dalbeattie and Mabie Forest, (also ideal for walking). Also in the vicinity is the Galloway Forest Park which is one of just a handful of ‘Dark Sky Parks’ in the western world in recognition of spectacular sightings of the starry skies it affords. The region’s capital, Dumfries, is a 25 minute drive, and is known for its links with Robert Burns; visitors may explore his house, sample a dram in Burns’ favourite hostelry - The Globe Inn, or find out more about him at the Robert Burns Centre. Other nearby activities include Golf (Colvend Golf Course and Southerness Golf Course), Fishing, Segway experiences, Bike hire, Canyoning, and Watersports. Along the coast, discover unspoilt villages, dramatic coastlines, sandy beaches and rocky coves, with gorgeous views across the Solway Firth to the Lakeland Fells of the Lake District. Plenty of nearby historic and horticultural interest: castles, abbeys, historic ruins and neolithic chambered tombs. This includes the medieval fortress Caelaverock Castle, Threave Caste and its’ wonderful gardens and nature reserve, Sweetheart Abbey, and Dundrennan Abbey (Cistercian abbey where Mary Queen of Scots sheltered, now a picturesque ruin). For those with artistic interests, the co-owner, Mark Welland, displays some of his artwork on site, and is always happy to show and discuss his art with guests. Many local artists are also in the area, with the nearby town of Kirkcudbright being the areas’ artists town, with galleries, museums, cafés, a distillery and planetarium. For those who like good food and drink, there’s a a variety of excellent farm shops, distilleries, breweries, pubs, cafés and restaurants in the vicinity, closest approximately 6 miles. There is wildlife in abundance with an RSPB Mersehead Nature Reserve nearby. Whitecroft Farm itself has plentiful wildlife such as roe deer, red squirrels, hare, badgers, bats and numerous birdlife including the majestic red kite and nesting Barn Owls. During times of agricultural activity (lambing, shearing and feeding animals) the owners are more than happy for visitors to view or even have a try. This includes feeding and petting our 2 Highland ’Coos’, tame sheep, and even taking our Blacknose Swiss Valais sheep for a wee walk! This can be arranged during your stay. In addition to being an ideal venue for a traditional Spring/Summer holiday, the cottages make for a perfect cosy Autumn/Winter break, which is a great time for seeing the amazing stars and night sky. Constructed and insulated to the highest standards with the benefit of a technologically advanced biomass boiler, you can enjoy the added bonus of central heating 365 days a year, meaning whatever the weather you’ll be warm and cosy in the cottages, for no additional cost.
