Summary:
Sunshine Cottage by the Sea is a traditional Waiheke beach bach located just steps from Onetangi Beach. Originally built in the 1920s, the cottage is simple, older in style, and focused on location rather than modern finishes or luxury accommodation. It suits guests wanting a relaxed beach-base stay close to the sand and sea
The Space:
Sunshine Cottage retains much of its original bach character, with timber floors, older-style interiors, and a practical layout typical of classic Waiheke holiday homes. The open plan living and kitchen area is simple and functional, with French doors opening onto the garden and outdoor dining space.
The cottage looks out across Onetangi Bay and is designed for easy beach living rather than indoor luxury. The kitchen is suited to simple holiday meals, while the lounge provides a comfortable place to relax after a day at the beach.
Please note this is an older property that has not been renovated, and guests should expect original features, older fittings, and the quirks that come with a traditional beach bach.
The bedrooms are located within the main cottage, while the bathroom is accessed externally via the back deck, in keeping with the original layout of the home. This setup may not suit all guests and is important to be aware of when booking.
Positioned at the quieter eastern end of Onetangi Beach, the property offers very easy beach access and a relaxed coastal setting away from the busier central part of the bay.

The Neighborhood:
Sunshine Cottage is located on one of Waiheke’s most loved stretches of coastline at Onetangi Beach, known for its wide sandy bay, calm swimming conditions, and long open shoreline. The beach sits just across the road, making it easy to head down for swims, walks, and relaxed afternoons by the water.
Several well known beachfront dining spots are within walking distance, including Charlie Farley’s, Three Seven Two, and Ki Māha. The Onetangi Valley is a short drive away and is home to popular vineyards such as Casita Miro, Obsidian, Stonyridge, Te Motu, Tantalus Estate, Wild on Waiheke, and The Heke Brewery.
Ostend Village is nearby for supermarkets, the Saturday market, and everyday essentials, while Oneroa Village offers additional dining, galleries, and shopping.
Getting Around:
Buses run from Onetangi, stopping near major vineyards including The Heke, before continuing through Ostend into Oneroa Village and on to the passenger ferry terminal. This makes it possible to explore the island without a car.
Parking is available at the property for guests who choose to bring a vehicle. Taxis and shuttle services operate across the island but can be limited during peak periods.
Other Things to Note:
