This historic Fort Screven structure has been fully restored and thoughtfully renovated. Redesigned by Layla Palmer of The Lettered Cottage, a recipient of the Tybee Island Historic Society Preservation Award, this remarkable home blends timeless character with fresh coastal style. Originally built as one of three Mess Halls for the fort, it has lived many lives—including a memorable chapter as a boarding house.
This beautiful home offers 2 bedrooms, 2 full baths, open living, dining, and kitchen areas, and a large screened in porch. Enlisted Men's Mess Hall also features tall ceilings with ceiling fans, extra large windows in every room, hardwood floors and did we mention wrap around screened porch.
Located in the historic north end of Tybee, where the beach is close by and the streets are very walkable, this is part of a duplex with Screened Inn on the other side with its own private entrance. These2 homes can be rented individually or together.
The outdoors area of this property features a fenced-in yard with beautiful landscaping, including large palms and live oaks.
Two blocks from the North Beach, 5 minutes from the Tybee Light House Station and the North Beach Bar and Grill restaurant. The Jaycee Park (ball fields, walking path, playground) is located directly behind the home.

Complimentary off-street parking for 2 cars. Parking is parallel to the white picket fence on the grass or you can pull into the right side of the picket fence.

House was so cute with amazing history. The hosts could not have been more accommodating. They even turned the porch lights on for us when they learned we would arrive after dark! Highly recommend Mermaid Cottages and this house. We walked everywhere and others staying in the neighborhood were all friendly and respectful. The fenced in yard was perfect for our dogs. Would definitely stay here again.

What a perfect getaway rental. This is a quiet, tucked away spot that’s so close to the beach, restaurants and cool things to do and see. 20 minutes from Savannah we spent several days going to many different museums and restaurants. The hop on & off trolley is worth it in Savannah. We rented bikes on the island because everything is so close. There are so many good places to eat, especially sweets. Definitely stop by Tybean coffee, it’s so charming and they have a great selection of coffee. We have an electric car and there is a fast charger right around the corner. Super convenient. This inn has private access to the beach which is so nice and is pretty hidden. We brought our 2 small dogs and they loved the fenced in yard and the screened in porch. The house itself has everything one would need. Their beds are very comfortable and there are plenty of them without feeling crowded. The hosts were absolutely fantastic. They check in on us and communicate without being intrusive. At the end we left something behind and Tammy reached out immediately to arrange for us to get back our items. Truly wonderful hosts and a wonderful place to stay and visit. Highly recommended.

Always wonderful

We have stayed at Screened Inn numerous times, and we can't imagine staying anywhere else when we visit Tybee. We also feel that the mermaids are hands down the best property management group that we've ever encountered. We'll be back as soon as possible!

Tybee Island vacation

Stayed here for a few days with my husband, our friends and their dog. The place was perfect for two couples or a couple with a few kids. The fenced in yard was excellent for the dog too! We spent most of our time on the delightful screened in porch watching life go by on the Island. Clean, cute and cleverly decorated. Easy walk to the beach through the secret gate. I would definitely come back and stay here again.

Tybee Perfection

Spotlessly clean, comfortable and full of old Tybee charm. Quiet location near the lighthouse and easy stroll to the beach. Loved this well-appointed and homey spot!

Vitamin Sea is awesome!

My family was in town for a wedding and stayed at Vitamin Sea. This house is awesome with great space for a large family. We very much enjoyed our stay and highly recommend this house and working with Mermaid Cottages!

We loved the cottage and the details done toward historic preservation. Mornings and evenings on the screened in porch were so peaceful. The fenced in yard for the dog was great. Convenient access to the beach.

Cute property

Super clean and cute property with tons of character, close to beach. The only negatives being the locks tend to stick making it hard to get in an out at times. Bed was not to our preference. Could feel springs poking and we found it extremely hard. Might just need a mattress topper. Checkin was also late in my opinion at 4 but this was clearly stated and might be common on the island?? Even so, we enjoyed our stay.

A Little Slice Of Tybee Island Heaven!

The best birthday weekend at the cutest little cottage! We loved everything about our stay! The communication was top notch! Location was perfect! The house was so clean I let my 7 mo old granddaughter crawl around everywhere. Beds were comfy, loved the screened in porch! My husband is a builder and loved the aesthetics of this historical home. We had dinner at the Crab Shack (2 mi away and a definite must eat at) the first night and grilled steaks at the cottage the 2nd night. We enjoyed a day at the beach, which was close enough to walk to. Thank you to the sweet host for my birthday bottle of wine! We can’t wait to go back for our next stay! This is definitely one of our favorite vacation rentals! You won’t go wrong picking this cute cottage for your next Tybee Island visit!

Adorable cottage! Perfect location!

We had such a great stay at the Enlisted Men’s Mess Hall. We felt welcome before we even arrived. Tammy was wonderful checking in with us before our arrival and when we first got there. We loved how we could easily walk to the beach, lighthouse ice cream and many restaurants. The space in the cottage was just right for our family of 4 and our 2 dogs loved the fenced in yard and daily walks around the adjacent park. We would love to come back!

Gorgeous cottage

We absolutely loved our stay at the Mess Hall Cottage. The kitchen was well equipped, the porch was a lovely place to spend our non-beach time and the beach was just a short walk away. We would definitely stay here again.

Practically Perfect

This quaint cottage is in the quiet historic district at the north end of Tybee Island, within walking distance of the beach and shops. It's a duplex, but no one was in the other half of the house except for 3 days out of the month we were there. Beds and linens were comfy and soft. The screened porch is a great place to relax or dine. The kitchen is small but workable. Service and communication were top notch. Highly recommended.

Family Reunion

The property was very nice and we really likes the historic style and tone of the neighborhood. The beach is easily accessible and directions were clear and provided by the property management. We stayed for about 6 days for a family reunion in the area and really liked the property over some that other family rented. Everything was as advertised and the property manager called a few times during the visit to be sure that everything was ok for our stay. I would stay here again if ever in the area.

Absolutely Wonderful!

This property was as beautiful as pictured, and then some! A few things either not listed, or that I may have overlooked: There's a wonderful master bath (I would have brought bath bombs and candles) and there's also beach chairs and a boogie board provided! Tammy was wonderful in accommodating us throughout a few of my mishaps (murphy's law is a thing with me) and we couldn't have asked for a better location! We hope we can come back soon!
