Welcome to The Birdhouse, a playful desert retreat in Twentynine Palms where retro design meets poolside living. Made for friends and families who like to have fun, this colorful getaway features a shipping container pool with an underwater viewing window, a pickleball court, a hot tub, and a separate game room bunkhouse. Just outside Joshua Tree National Park's Indian Cove entrance, it's a place where the house is as much of an attraction as the desert beyond.
The Space:
The Birdhouse doesn't take itself too seriously, and that's exactly what makes it special. Inspired by the bold colors and personality of the 1960s and 70s, its interiors bring together lime-green Viking appliances, patterned walls, vintage-inspired furnishings, and unexpected design details. Oversized sofas invite everyone to settle in, while sliding glass doors open the living space to a backyard designed for swimming, games, and afternoons that turn into evenings without anyone wanting to leave.
Two separate buildings give the property its own rhythm. The main house brings cooking, dining, lounging, and sleeping together in an inviting open-concept space. Across the property, the bunkhouse doubles as a game room, with a pool table, music, and additional sleeping accommodations. Outside, the desert hills frame a collection of places to gather, from the pool deck to the pickleball court and fireside seating.

-Outdoor Amenities-
The backyard is where The Birdhouse really comes alive. At its center is a converted shipping container swimming pool, complete with a transparent underwater viewing window that lets friends watch the action from outside. It's an unusual feature that turns an ordinary afternoon swim into part of the entertainment. Above the pool, a sun deck with loungers provides a place to stretch out between dips.
When you're ready to get moving, challenge your group to a pickleball match or a game of cornhole. The six-person hot tub offers a more relaxed alternative, especially after a day exploring the national park.
A gas BBQ and outdoor dining table for eight make it easy to keep everyone outside for dinner. As the desert hills take on their evening colors, move over to the gas fire pit for conversation beneath the open sky.
The backyard is fully privacy-fenced, with panoramic views of the surrounding desert landscape. Whether your group spends the day exploring Indian Cove or never makes it past the pool, there's plenty of room to make the most of the sunshine.
-Living Area-
Step inside the main house and you'll find a living room that feels more like a thoughtfully collected retro hideaway than a conventional vacation rental. A generous patterned sectional wraps around the seating area, with warm rust-colored accents, vintage-inspired furniture, and a playful television cabinet giving the room its distinctive character.
The open layout keeps everyone connected. Someone can be preparing dinner while others play music, lounge on the sofas, or gather around the dining table. Large glass doors frame the patio and desert hills, bringing natural light inside and making the backyard feel like an extension of the living room.
A wall-mounted iPad controls the home's lighting, climate, and music, adding modern convenience to the nostalgic surroundings.
-Kitchen and Dining-
The kitchen is one of The Birdhouse's defining design features. Bright green cabinetry and matching Viking appliances stand against graphic black-and-white patterned walls, while a red-tiled arch above the range adds another unexpected splash of color.
Beyond its personality, the kitchen is equipped for meals at home, with cookware, utensils, spices, and oils provided. Start the morning with a Nespresso or freshly brewed drip coffee, or settle into the dining nook with tea before heading out for the day.
The built-in banquette creates a sociable place for breakfast, snacks, and conversation while someone cooks. For larger gatherings, the outdoor dining table seats eight, making dinner outside a natural part of the experience.
-Bedrooms and Bathrooms-
The Birdhouse accommodates up to six guests across two buildings, with two bedrooms, two bathrooms, and four beds in total. Its open-concept arrangement is especially well suited to families and close groups of friends who are comfortable sharing connected living and sleeping spaces.
The main house includes a king sleeping area alongside the central living spaces, carrying the home's colorful, retro character into the sleeping accommodations.
The separate bunkhouse offers a second king sleeping area and a bedroom with two full-size bunk beds. Its bright, playful interiors include a striking Joshua Tree sunset mural, tying the property's design to the surrounding landscape.
All beds feature memory foam mattresses, and both bathrooms offer rain showers and quality bath products.
Because the main house and bunkhouse feature open-concept spaces, we recommend reviewing the sleeping layout before booking to ensure it suits your group's preferences for privacy.
-Game Room Bunkhouse-
The separate bunkhouse is one of the best reasons to bring friends or family to The Birdhouse. Part sleeping accommodation, part entertainment room, it's a space where an afternoon game can easily become the evening's main event.
A seven-foot pool table with vivid pink felt takes center stage, surrounded by comfortable seating and colorful artwork. Two large-screen TVs, a record player with a vinyl collection, and board games give your group plenty of ways to spend time together.
The combination of sleeping and recreation spaces makes the bunkhouse particularly fun for groups who like to stay up playing games, listening to records, and enjoying the house as much as the destination.
With Joshua Tree National Park's Indian Cove area nearby and the restaurants and shops of both Joshua Tree and Twentynine Palms within reach, The Birdhouse makes an inviting base for exploring the high desert. But with a backyard full of things to do and a house this full of personality, you may find that some of your favorite moments happen without ever leaving the property.

Aspectos positivos: Limpieza, llegada, comunicación, ubicación y precisión del anuncio
A relaxing, rejuvenating, adventure-filled week away
Coming from the east coast, our early-May stay in the Joshua Tree area was lovely. The Birdhouse was everything my wife and I hoped for and more! The hosts were wonderful -- communication was clear and timely, accessing the house was easy and intuitive, the pool, jacuzzi, and game room/bunk house were treats. While we came to town to visiting the National Park, we spent LOTS more time around the house than expected due to how fun, welcoming, and enjoyable it was. We'll definitely be back -- can't say enough good things about the home, it's location, decor, and value. Thanks for a lovely stay!
