INTRODUCTION TO TINOS ISLAND Tinos attracts Greek-island connoisseurs & lovers of inspiring design. If you’re looking for a sophisticated property on an island of great authenticity and tradition, look no further than Homatinos Villa. Tradition is everywhere & the island possesses a truly Greek soul, from the windmills and dovecotes that dot the hinterland, to the creamy local marble beloved by Greek sculptors for millennia.
GETTING THERE Fly to Mykonos and then take a ferry (15mins - 30mins). Alternatively there are daily ferry routes connecting Athens (Rafina or Pereus Port) to Tinos Island.
GOOD TO KNOW - Artistic traditions: Tinos is famed for its marble and its sculptors – just see the marble museum in Pyrgos - The most curious sight: the over 600 ornate dovecotes scattered across the island - Village life: Tinos has many picturesque little villages, the most perfect of which is Kardiani - Most visited sight: the Panagía Evangelístria church is one of the top pilgrimage sites in the Greek Orthodox world - Culinary Destination : The food in Tinos is exquisite, you can't really go wrong anywhere you may choose to dine in the island
TO SEE - Panagia Evangelestria – Tinos is home to 750 churches and chapels but the most important by far is the Panagia Evangelestria. The pristine complex hosts a major shrine dedicated to the Annunciation of the Virgin Mary and since 1830 has been considered as one of the most important Christian pilgrimage sites in Greece. A huge Greek Orthodox celebration known as the Dormition of the Mother of God takes place on 15th August which means huge crowds of devotees make their way to the island to pay their respects. On any other day, the church is well worth a visit to see the icon of Panagia (the Virgin Mary) which is believed to hold miraculous powers. - Pyrgos – The word Pyrgos means ‘tower’ in Greek and this scenic village is named so after a Venetian fortress built there in the 16th century as a means of defence. This is one of the larger villages on Tinos and showcases a rich history of marble-making which has been a key cultural attribute of the island since antiquity. The white and green marble of Tinos is celebrated in Pyrgos’ museums, galleries, and marble workshops as well as in the architecture and monuments which make up the village. On each street and alley there is something fascinating to behold but its hub is the main square. A magnificent plane tree is planted aside a marble fountain in the centre of the square and both are surrounded by quaint shops and cafes. It is the perfect spot to end after exploring the village’s endless visual delights. - Climbing Routes – With its mountainous terrain, Tinos provides the perfect conditions for rock-climbing in the vast and unblemished landscape. Over 100 climbing trails can be found at Mount Exomvogou (also the site of prehistoric and medieval ruins) all equipped with steel plug-rings drilled into the granite rocks. Other excellent bouldering locations on Tinos include Volax, Petriados and Kakia Sakla.
