Our property is located in the heart of the Corbières region, in Cathar Country, at the foot of the Termes fortress, at the entrance to the vertiginous cliffs of the Termenet Gorges, in the heart of the wilderness, surrounded by beautiful holm oak forests, garrigue, and Mediterranean meadows.

This is where we chose to settle down, renovating our old sheepfold and two vacation rentals, surrounded by nature, far from pollution and mass tourism. Since then, we have been raising a herd of ponies and donkeys on a property of nearly 100 hectares in the surrounding Mediterranean mountains.

The vacation rental is located on the edge of the woods, on the site of a former vineyard, in complete tranquility, far from the road and other homes. It features two terraces with panoramic views of the mountains, the vertiginous cliffs of the Termenet Gorges, and the Cathar castle.

On this 5-hectare enclosed property surrounding the house, your children can play peacefully and safely.

Our region has a Mediterranean climate. This results in lush vegetation consisting of holm oaks, pines, arbutus trees, junipers, cade trees, lavender, marjoram, rockroses, cypresses, and numerous orchids.

In the spring, nature is bathed in a sea of flowers. For hours on end, you’ll stroll through the flower-filled meadows of the high plateaus, encountering no one but the shepherd, while taking in a magnificent panorama: hundreds of kilometers of Pyrenean peaks, snow-capped until July, and to the north, the dark mass of the Montagne Noire and the foothills of the Massif Central. At sunset, the spectacle of the rocky Corbières mountains plunging into the sea unfolds.

Even in summer, the nights are pleasantly cool, clear, and free of any air pollution. They offer spectacular sunsets and a night sky of breathtaking clarity.

Fall, too, offers its own special charms. Days often remain pleasantly mild until the end of October. After the September grape harvest, the vineyards turn shades of yellow and bright red. This is also chestnut season—perfect for roasting them in a skillet.

Countless hiking opportunities await you, right from the house. The GR 36 trail passes just a few hundred meters away, and several marked circular hiking trails will take you to the Château de Termes, where you’ll learn about its turbulent past as a Cathar stronghold and royal fortress, to the flower-filled village of Termes, the steep Termenet Gorges, or the white limestone cliffs of the Roc de Nitable. We’ve also opened hiking and walking trails around the Prat de Mu—not listed in any guidebooks—that we’d be delighted to help you explore.

In the nearby Termenet Gorges (a 500-meter walk), you’ll find plenty of opportunities for swimming in streams, refreshing waterfalls, and natural slides, as well as calm pools for swimming—not to mention all the local rivers.

Additionally, Prat de Mu is a wonderful starting point for exploring Cathar country and its castles (Termes, Villerouge, Aguilar, Peyrepertuse, Queribus, Padern, Durban, Arques). We’d be happy to provide you with guidebooks, brochures, and books on the history and the Cathar region. At the reception desk of Termes Castle, you’ll find a fascinating exhibition on the subject, complete with videos, a bookstore, and a small museum. The digital tour will allow you to explore the castle on your phone or tablet.

You might be tempted to take a trip to the beaches along the Mediterranean coast (a 1-hour drive) or go on an excursion to the Pyrenees, Andorra, the Canal du Midi (a UNESCO World Heritage Site), or the city of Carcassonne. The beautiful city of Narbonne will enchant you with the songs of Charles Trenet, a native of this lovely Mediterranean city. Others may enjoy a visit to the Sigean African Wildlife Park or the Dinosaur Museum in Espéraza in the Aude Valley.
