"I really enjoyed my stay at Kashiwaya Ryokan. Although it was long to get to without a car, it was worth the travel. The 2 days there didn’t feel like it was enough time. I will return again for sure. The room was comfortable, the private onsen were beautiful and amazing. The kaiseki served at dinner were delicious and perfectly balanced. The traditional Japanese breakfast (there were Western styled breakfast and brunch at the cafe in Shima Onsen town) was incredible as well. I want to thank the...

"This is a lovely 'boutique hotel' in an absolutely beautiful part of the area north of Nakanojo near Lake Okushima. I wanted a truly Japanese place and I got it. Few, if any, 'foreigners' in the area. I was provided a bike and road around for 3 hours. The owner is a beautiful, kind lady and her and her staff treated me like a king. I had a room with a private hot spring pool - all I can say is "wow". If you want to see a place off the beaten track, I highly recommend this hotel."

"The person at the front desk spoke English very well. This was one of the most unique (in a good way) properties that I stayed at. The room was spotless, and in the traitional Japanese style. It was very large and had a mini SNES with large TV. The window blinds were of the traditional so I woke up early.
There is a game room with some retro games as well as a massage chair.
What I liked the most about this property is that there are three semi-private onsens that can be used. They are...

"The staff at this property is top notch. My friends and I were welcomed warmly, quickly given recommendations in and around Kusatsu, and even provided a complimentary sweet milk, traditionally consumed after an onsen soak.
The facility was very much a labor of love. The private onsens were clean, convenient, and absolutely rejuvenating.
The public areas were intimate, clean, and provided retro video games and board games.
We were even offered complimentary coffee at a coffee shop close to...

"Breakfasts were excellent. Every staff were friendly and we really felt like home. Location is nearby the major travel spot but not noisy.
Everything is good, just a very little thing: moved luggages by hand to room at 2nd floor. To me as a hushand and a daddy, it meant luggages of 3 persons I moved. "

"Very beautiful place with beautiful onsen, the food was a little bit hard for us because we are not use to Japanese traditional food but it was good. The people from the hotel were very nice and helpful."

"This ryokan was lovely- all the staff were so accommodating and made us feel very special! The ryokan itself is dainty and pleasant. There was public Onsens for women’s and men’s separate (in the women’s there was 1 indoor and 1 outdoor public Onsen with shower room inside). You can also book a private Onsen when you arrive - they have 45 min time slots for 3000 yen! Also very quick walk to Yubatake and the bus station! Would recommend"

"Great location, just couple steps from Yubatake hot springs, you can tell facilities are a bit old but well kept, big room, great staff, big buffete dinner, breakfast a bit short in options but good, safe area. It is a natural onsen town so expect its particular smell at all time, inside hotel they do a good job isolating it but still keep that in mind. Onsen is awesome, by gender, traditional dress code (no clothes), 3 hot tubs at different temps and outdoor pool."

"Had an awesome stay, right up in the mountains. Staff were great and even shuttled us to the train station and back whenever we needed it. Loved and it would definitely stay again. "
