Wallops Island Virginia, USA. This island is just a few miles from Chincoteaque island which is well known for the wild ponies that live on and around the beach. Rockets are now launched from Wallops island that provide provisions for ISS (International Space Station) . It is very accessible to the public for viewing launches. On Tuesday, the 28th of October we traveled to the see this Antares rocket launch but it immediately exploded and I got the shot. Not what we wanted to see but at least there was no one hurt. This is a really great place to visit if you want to view rocket launches and also visit Chincoteaque and Assateague wild ponies.
The lighthouse has been restored and is beautiful! There is a short hike to the lighthouse from the road. It is open for tours, but the times vary, so if that is on your list of things to do while on the island....you will want to check on the dates it is open at the beginning of your visit.
Stop at Tom's Cove for information about this end of Assateague Island. The park rangers are all friendly and happy to share information about the park and the horses.
