✨Hidden Gem✨

El Matador really is a hidden gem of places to stay when searching for a place to take your family. We came as a family of 4 (Me, Husband,& 2 Kiddos). We searched from Orange Beach, Alabama all the way to Panama City Beach, Florida. If I’m being honest, I was a bit worried I could be disappointed because our condo rental was several hundred dollars cheaper($300-$500) than most other place we looked at. Plus, I do not know anyone who has ever stayed there. We took a chance and we LOVED the location. The beach was perfect! You literally park right outside your building and walk right in! If anyone goes to the beach often, then you understand parking can be a nightmare during the summer months! Not to mention you may have to walk a mile to your condo! Not here! My favorite thing about the entire trip was El Matador is the last building on the strip before it turns to miles of beach that’s off limits due to air aviation! So that means not near as many people trying to hit the beach! Not near as crowded! As for our room, it was great. We had plenty of room! It is a large one bedroom unit! It was very clean and the balcony view was wonderful. You can see the pool and ocean from the balcony. Very peaceful! The entire El Matador grounds are clean. The pool was a hit with the kids! It was also big and clean! We will certainly be returning to El Madador for future beach trips!

Large one bedroom with great views

We had an amazing time at this unit in the El Matador complex. Me and my wife came down for a week to celebrate one last trip before our first child arrives in November. The unit was clean and very spacious. However, it was lacking some of the essentials that other units we have stayed at had: hair dryer, salt/pepper, olive oil, coffee, etc. Plan ahead to stop at the grocery store. Overall we really enjoyed the unit.

We loved staying at El Matador. The whole complex was clean and it was easy to walk to the beach. The pool was great and our grandchildren loved it. It was nice not to have to deal with Destin traffic!

No door to bedroom

Disappointed that the bedroom had NO door to it which was next the the bathroom where our daughter had to go through. Dishes were heavy china and not very good to use for family. Where you put trash down a trash shoot for the facility is not even big enough opening to put a trash bag down.

Needs Updating & Better WIFI

This unit was one of the largest one bedrooms we have ever stayed in & the view from the balcony was great. The outdoor furniture was not the best or comfortable. The unit as a whole needs updating but was clean. The bed was VERY Soft and every time you turned over the whole bed would move waking me or my husband. I like a soft bed but this was terrible. They kitchen was not stocked as well as others we have stayed in. We picked our key up at 3 o’clock ( check in time) & when we got there, the maid was not finished cleaning. It took her about another 20 minutes to finish, but I’m sure she had more than one unit to clean that morning. The WIFI (Cox) was non existent!!! I was very disappointed in this. Anyone needing it to be able to work while on vacation could not do it. Thank goodness we brought our on with us. The grounds & pool were very well kept.

Nice location, but musty and decor/furnishings awful

Let me start with the positives: 1. Fantastic location. You can be standing on the beach in less than five minutes. There is not another property to the one side of the complex for miles. 2. Comfy bed. 3. Newer, smart TV. 4. Management company allowed me to change my dates when it became obvious that the weather was going to be terrible during my original dates. I appreciated this. Now, for the many negatives: 1. Upon opening the door to this unit, the musty smell hit us like a punch in the face. We later discovered several obvious water damage spots on the ceiling which may be the source of the smell. There was also another strange smell in the unit in the back half of the bathroom and the back half of the kitchen, which are on opposite sides of the wall to each other. It’s important to note the musty smell for those who have allergies or asthma. 2. The heated pool was not open. Upon inquiring to the main office at El Matador, I was told that this work on the heated pool had been planned and the owners had all been notified, and that the person who listed this on Vrbo should have given people a heads up that there would be no heated pool on these dates. Because the weather was quite chilly and the regular pool was like an ice bath, there were effectively no pools to use at this complex. This was extremely disappointing that nothing was posted in the Vrbo listing that the pool would be unavailable in this time frame. 3. Old and absolutely garish decor and furnishings. It was obvious from the pictures that the furnishings were not modern, but I wasn’t expecting them to be this bad. There was an old velour green recliner that had to have been from the 1980s that did not properly open and close and sat in an angle when open. Two of the four chairs out on the balcony were cobbled together out of PVC pipe, and upon sitting in one I wondered why I felt like I was leaning to the side. I discovered that the supporting mesh underneath was ripped 3/4 of the way across. Someone is eventually going to sit in that chair, break through, and hurt themselves. (Don’t they inspect the condition of the furniture?) The sofa sits next to the TV, so it’s very difficult for potentially half of your group to watch TV. There is a huge metal office desk that looks like it’s from the 1960s occupying an entire corner. 4. There’s a sizable gap between the door threshold and where the tile starts. I’m running out of room, but bottom line: invest in your property.

Great location but needs some updates.

It didn’t start off well; I sent several messages after I booked and received no response from the property manager through the message function that VRBO provides. Someone from the realty company that manages the property should monitor messages. The location is fabulous, but a few updates to the condo would be nice. Overall it was a fun time!

Great location, decent accommodations

The property managers were great and check in was a breeze. I also wanted to make a last minute change to my payment method and they were graciously accommodating . This location was also absolutely wonderful! We were literally steps from the beach and went for a wonderful walk every day after breakfast. It wasn’t crowded, the property was clean and well stocked. The complex itself, interior and furniture were a bit dated and there were a couple of spots where water damage was evident on the ceiling.. But overall, it was a great stay, reasonably priced and we would stay there again...

Four days in paradise

We ventured out of our usual stay in Destin to try Fort Walton and were not disappointed. El Matador was very family oriented, clean and the folks were friendly. Our room was very spacious. The beach was a lot less crowded and somewhat secluded. We will not hesitate to book again.

El Matador

The condo had the best location that we have ever been at in all our trips to the Emerald Coast. Pool was amazing! I will definitely be back! Internet worked great! Beds were very comfortable.
