Gable View - Luxury Riverside Sanctuary

Gable View – Luxury Riverside Sanctuary

Where contemporary elegance meets panoramic river views, Gable View is a magnificent detached home, newly renovated to offer the very best in luxury living. Spanning three beautifully designed levels, this exceptional property boasts six serene en suite bedrooms and a collection of light-filled reception rooms, all finished with exquisite attention to detail. Expansive Italian large-format tiles flow throughout, drawing the eye to sweeping vistas of the river and rolling countryside beyond.

Step through the front door into a grand reception hall — a statement in itself — where soft LED and pendant lighting set the mood, and a sleek staircase with a glass balustrade leads gracefully to the upper floors. From here, double doors open into the heart of the home: an impressive L-shaped, open-plan kitchen and dining space. Floor-to-ceiling windows and twin sets of sliding glass doors flood the room with natural light and connect you effortlessly to the sun terrace, where breathtaking river and countryside views unfold before you.

The bespoke, handmade kitchen blends classic shaker cabinetry with modern craftsmanship. A generous central island provides both a stylish focal point and a practical space for gathering, while a mirrored splashback adds depth and glamour. Every detail has been considered — from the integrated double ovens and induction hob to the discreet worktop-level extractor and integrated coffee machine. This kitchen is a chef delights to conjure up those lavish evening meals to enjoy at the large round table or out on the sun terrace.

Beyond this space, the ground floor also features a relaxed sitting room — perfect for quiet moments with a book — and a dedicated study, ideal for those wishing to blend a stay with a little home working.

Venture to the lower ground level and you’ll discover two further reception rooms, both thoughtfully designed for leisure and entertainment. A magnificent 23ft games room promises competitive fun whilst a cinema room invites gatherings with friends and family, Each opens directly onto the lower sun terrace through sliding glass doors, connecting the indoors to the landscape beyond. This level also houses a practical utility and laundry room and a cloakroom.

For guests seeking a little extra privacy, the ground floor also includes a double bedroom with its own en suite shower room. Please note that the bed in this room is a 4’6 Study bed.

Upstairs, the first floor is home to five further double bedrooms, each a calming retreat with understated, contemporary décor and luxurious fittings. The principal suite is a highlight — complete with an Emperor bed, bespoke dressing area, extensive handcrafted wardrobes, an indulgent en suite bathroom, and a Juliet balcony that frames the river views. The further four bedrooms benefit from their own en suite shower rooms, whilst three enjoy private balconies via sliding glass doors. Three of these bedrooms have super kingsize beds that can be made into singles upon request, whilst the fourth has a fixed kingsize bed.

A Riverside Sanctuary

The gardens are as captivating as the interiors. To the rear, two expansive sun terraces — one at ground level and one at lower ground level — offer idyllic spots for al fresco dining or simply soaking in the scenery. Steps lead down to a gently sloping lawn, bordered by lush hedgerows, and onward to the River Teign’s edge. Here, a private gate and steps provide direct access to the water, making it a dream location for sailing, kayaking, paddleboarding, or simply watching the ebb and flow of the tide.

To the front, a gravel driveway sweeps towards a detached double garage, offering potential for conversion into a studio or annexe, subject to permissions. There’s ample parking for multiple vehicles, and a charming gravel path guides you to the covered front terrace — a welcoming introduction to this remarkable home.

There is also an EV charger for you to use if required.

Other things to note

There is a paddleboard that you can use at your own risk. You will need to bring your own buoyancy aid.

Please advise if you need any of the three superkings made into single beds.

The property has an instant hot water tap in the kitchen, there is no kettle.

There is a security camera on the garage facing the driveway.

The Neighbourhood

Gable View is located in Combeignteignhead on the banks of the river and close to Shaldon, one of the most sought after areas of South Devon, which is located in an area of outstanding natural beauty, next to the Teign Estuary, and only 20 minutes to Dartmoor, Exeter and Torbay.

Because of the nature of the location, with a selection of beaches, Pubs and restaurants, Shaldon is a popular destination for those wanting to experience the perfect Devon experience.

Shaldon’s History

There is little to doubt that a settlement existed between the Ness and Ringmore as long ago as the Domesday Book. Shaldon itself was mentioned in Chancery proceedings during the reign of King James 1.

The original settlement was in Ringmore- the beautiful and sheltered valley, the Saxons built a wooden Church, not the stone built St Nicholas, and the Celtic name of Ringmore means ‘ a great enclosure or clearing’.

Silt has washed down the Estuary over the centuries, causing the river flow to slow down and the estuary to widen, to land has been reclaimed over time, and most of Shaldon has been built on reclaimed land. In the 1800s a retaining wall was built to prevent the water from returning to the silted areas.

Early man would have farmed and fished, and later sailed to far away places. Local names provide clues such as nearby Labrador Bay..along the coast.

Trade grew, and shipbuilders plied their trade in Ringmore & Shaldon. The deep-water channel was originally on the Shaldon side, and a flourishing Port was established. When the Shaldon side channel silted up, the channel deepened at Teignmouth, and trade was re established in Teignmouth Docks. It is no mean feat to bring in the large container ships used today over the shifting sands of the bar, to reach the port. The narrow channel is still 30m or so deep, even at low water.

Shipbuilding was very important to village life in Shaldon, there were several early shipyards –Ringmore had two. One located in the area of the King George playing fields and the other above Ringmore Towers-adjacent to the little area jutting into the water, where benches, trees and the sundial are located. Part of the fleet of ships used in the Napoleonic wars was built here. River Teign was also busy with with barge traffic, from both the Clay pits at Newton Abbot and the granite quarries at Haytor. Some Haytor granite is in the British Museum and the National gallery.

Before 1827, the only way across the river to Shaldon was fording at low tide, or a long journey around through Newton Abbot. The first bridge linking Teignmouth and Shaldon was a wooden one in 1827, and at that time was the longest wooden bridge in England. Part collapsed in 1838 after an attack of woodworm !. The structure was changed in 1931 to allow a portion to open, and was last updated and strengthened in the last 10 years.

Many parts of Shaldon and Ringmore are conservation areas, with listed buildings from the seventeenth and even some from the fifteenth century.

Today Shaldon welcomes holiday makers as part of its daily commerce, whilst still retaining its fishing heritage, boat trips and cottage industries thrive, and the village is lucky enough to have a full range of shops, pubs and restaurants. A complete transition from the Schooner and men-of-war building to a pleasure and fishing centre-now accessed by excellent transport links by both road and rail.
