  • THE PROPERTY
    Mill Barn is a luxury holiday cottage like no other. Positioned on Chailey Common, a Local Nature Reserve and SSI in East Sussex, it is a stunning, spacious barn conversion with contemporary styling and lovely design touches, perfect for a romantic getaway.     The sumptuous sitting room offers comfy sofas, a cosy log burner and lovely spiral stairs up to the first floor. The kitchen is fully-equipped and includes an induction range cooker, fridge, freezer, dishwasher and washer-dryer. There is also a boot room with WC downstairs.

    Upstairs the bright, spacious bedroom has built-in wardrobes, a king-size bed and views over the Common. Next door, the decadent bathroom boasts a deep double-end bath, separate walk-in rainfall shower, and comes complete with bathrobes and slippers (please leave in the cottage on departure!). Outside you also have a good-sized private walled garden. Genuinely one of the finest cosy cottages in Sussex, Mill Barn offers a perfect blend of warmth and luxury.

    LOCAL AREA
    Step out of the door and straight onto Chailey Common for plentiful walks across this pretty SSI landscape. Sheffield Park Gardens, the Bluebell Railway, Ridgeview Wine Estate and Bluebell Vineyards are all within a 10-minute drive. Further afield, head to Lewes and enjoy wandering the pretty centre of this historic market town, visit Brighton, or book early for Glyndebourne Opera.

    - Pets: generally not allowed. However one small, well-behaved dog may be considered on advance request, at the owner's discretion. If the request is accepted, a dog will be charged at GBP30 per week or part week.
    - This property has a security deposit of GBP200, if not taken by this platform we will contact you after booking to arrange.
    - Once you have placed your booking request, before we can process your booking we will require some simple additional details such as postal address, guest names and direct email. Please do not book if you are unable to provide this information, as we cannot offer a refund on this basis.
    - Arrival and departure times are clearly stated. As our properties can be booked right up until the last minute, we are unable to confirm early check-in or late check-out requests until 24-72 hours prior to your arrival/departure. Should you prefer to guarantee any such request now, please add an additional night to the start and/or end of your booking.
    - Accessibility: There is one step (15cm) to the front door threshold. Spiral staircase to the first floor. Other internal floors are level and even. This is intended as a guide only and accuracy is not guaranteed, please contact us if you need more info. Measurements are approx.
    - Kitchen: Electric Everhot range cooker with induction hobs (pots and pans provided) and double oven, slimline dishwasher, fridge, freezer, washer-dryer, double butler sink, microwave, toaster, kettle, 2 cafetieres, Bosch Tassimo coffee machine. A starter supply of fresh coffee and pods is provided.
    - 1 babe in arms (max 1 year old and not walking) is welcome. 1 travel cot (bedding provided) and 1 highchair available on advance request.
    - The property has a spiral staircase to access the first floor and a wood burner which gets very hot, please bear this in mind if bringing an infant.
    - Please note candles are not permitted at Mill Barn.
    - Mill Barn is decorated for the Christmas season.
    - Bathrobes and slippers provided (please leave in the cottage on departure!).
    - Iron, ironing board, clothes airer and hairdryer provided.
    - Logs are provided for reasonable use of the wood stove during your stay
    - Fully enclosed garden with table and chairs, fire pit and BBQ (on request).
    - Private yoga lessons can be arranged in the cottage or its tranquil garden, please contact us for details
    - This property has an alarm, however it will be turned off before your arrival. If you would like to set it whilst you are out during your stay, please contact us or the owner.
    - There are 2 parking spaces available on the private drive next to the cottage.

Lovely stay in June

My husband and I enjoyed a week in Mill Barn in early June. Unfortunately the weather didn't want to play along so we couldn't enjoy the beautiful garden as much as I had hoped, but that was no loss - the cottage is adorable inside too and it's perfect for cozy cocooning when it's rainy. We enjoyed the smart TV, bath and wonderful shower, as well as the well equipped kitchen. There are plenty of fun day trips in the area and Penny was incredibly kind and helpful during our stay. I would book again without any hesitation.

Wonderful cottage

This beautiful cottage is outstanding in every way, each room has its own personality and warmth, from coming in the gate to the front door and beyond. Great for snuggling up by the fire after a long soak in the beautiful bathroom after a long walk or shopping.

Our stay at Mill Barn

Although this was booked in my name it was my brother and sister-in-law from New Zealand who stayed there and they thoroughly enjoyed the comfort and cosiness of the cottage. The lovely basket of wine and other treats was much appreciated and Penny the owner was helpful and charming.

A beautiful place to stay !

Mill barn is truly beautiful. It’s in a wonderful setting and the barn is delightful in every way , from the lovely interior to the very pretty little garden and the common next to it. Penny is the perfect host and the little touches in the barn make the world of difference , better than a 5 star hotel ! We will definitely be back.

Holiday perfection

What can I say that reflects how wonderful our stay was at Mill Barn ! Except perfection. Great location, so well equipped with everything you need for a great holiday. Spotlessly clean. Welcome touches such as fresh flowers, biscuits, wine etc. Best holiday cottage I have stayed at and I have stayed at a lot !

A great little find.

Fantastic place to stay with a very warm welcome from Penny. The welcome basket and the condition of the cottage was great, in fact one of the best we have stayed in. Location great for walks on the common and meeting the ponies who regularly paid us a visit was a joy. Location was nice and quite and with the comfort of the cottage itself, what more could you want. Hoping to return as soon as we can sort something out.

Relaxing stay in beautiful location thanks to our superb host

Mill Barn was simply perfect for our extended weekend break. Penny was such an attentive and communicative host who went out of her way before, on arrival and during our stay to ensure we were comfortable and had everything we needed. We were so grateful for the thoughtful touches (fire ready to light, welcome basket of goodies and later check out) which really made us feel very welcome and ‘at home’.

A real gem

Mill Barn is all you'd ever want in a holiday cottage, and more. From the stylish and well-equipped interior to the beautiful garden and stunning surroundings, it really is a gem. Add to that a very kind and genuinely caring host, and you have a winning combination. I run private retreats and I see a lot of holiday cottages in the course of my work, and this really is as good as it gets. I look forward to returning with new clients in the future.

We felt completely at ease from beginning to end

You can only rate everything with the most stars. The hostess is something you couldn't ask for. It got dark quite early for this time of year. No problem at all; we returned around 4:00 pm, enjoyed a pot of tea in the living room, and felt right at home. The Christmas tree greeted us upon arrival. We felt completely at ease from beginning to end. It certainly won't be our last visit.

Man kann alles nur mit den meisten Sternen bewerten. Eine Gastgeberin wie Penny kann man sich nur wünschen. Um die Jahreszeit war es schon recht früh dunkel. Alles kein Problem so gegen 16:00 h wieder einkehren, Kessel an teatime im Wohnzimmer sitzen und sich wohlfühlen. Bei der Anreise beim eintreten begrüßte uns schon der Tannenbaum. Man fühlte sich von Anfang bis Ende zu Hause. War wohl nicht der letzte Besuch.

Beautiful!

My husband and I could have chosen so many places to stay on our recent trip to the UK…long and the short of it, we chose Mill Barn and are so glad we did! An absolutely stunning property, well taken care of by its owner. We received a very warm welcome after our flight from Toronto…after it being an overnight which was 4 hrs late departing. I was able to contact Penny with ease from the airport to update her, her reply was almost instant and reassuring that it would be all ready for us to rest. The setting of the cottage it unbelievable and sooo very quiet. All amenities are up to date, much better than you would even expect. If you are thinking of a stay at Mill Barn please, do not hesitate…thank you Penny for such a wonderful stay!

A delightful cottage stay

This was our second stay at Mill Barn. Owner, Penny, goes a step beyond in making sure that the cottage is in pristine condition when you arrive. The place is immaculately clean. Fresh flowers adorn every room. A lovely hamper filled with goodies is an added luxury. Everything works as it should. Location wise, this is perfect. Near enough to travel to Lewes or Haywards Heath (and beyond) but far enough away to enjoy total quiet - we loved just walking on the heathland surrounding us . The garden was a wonderful retreat too. This is a perfect place for romance and a perfect place for rest and quiet. Personal circumstances meant that I needed the latter this year. The cottage haven was exactly what was needed.

second time visiting; hoping for a third

we never usually go back to a holiday venue, but this is the second time we've stayed at Mill Barn, and it's really becoming a peaceful home away from home. the place is fantastic, very well appointed throughout, wth a superb bathroom, nice kitchen, and very relaxing lounge area. owner Penny could not be more accommodating and helpful, and really makes you feel so welcome, both in person and with her welcome pack. it's pleasantly independent of any nearby buildings, and over the private garden wall is hundreds of hectares of forest for walks and exploration. and if you like pheasants, rabbits, or owls, the nearby woods have many. my only concern is leaving this review may help more people discover Mill Barn and limit our own chances of returning again! {:-)

Charming cottage

Home away from home. This cottage is equipped with everything you would need. Attention to detail in all spaces. Lovely area for walks and hikes. Close to shopping. Great hosts. Parking is right outside your cottage. Bedroom and bathroom are upstairs. Comfortable bed and extra large bath.

An excellently presented property.

We had a thoroughly enjoyable seven day stay in this excellently presented property. Everything was of a very high standard.. It was ideally suited for two people. It was in a delightful setting, away from the main road and very quiet but not isolated. We would have no hesitation in returning.

A wonderful relaxing week

We’ve enjoyed a wonderful, relaxing week at beautiful Mill Barn (our second visit). Yet again Penny has thought of everything to ensure a memorable stay. The generous welcome basket and fresh flowers were perfect! Enjoyed some great walks on the South Downs Way from Ditchling Beacon and a couple of relaxing days out at Nymans and Sheffield Park. Returning to the beautiful garden at Mill Barn afterwards just completed the perfect day.

Mill Barn is the most stunningly beautiful place to stay

Mill Barn is the most stunningly beautiful place to stay. The location is just idyllic, with the sound of birdsong and we loved watching the rabbits playing... Surrounded by bluebells and gorgeous countryside, I cannot think of a better place to escape to – it has a truly magical feel. As for Mill Barn itself we just love it. The attention to detail, the calming decor, fresh flowers and herbs, basket of treats... Thank you Penny, we didn’t want to leave!

Our second stay...

Our second stay at Mill Barn and it has been just perfect, again! It is a real ‘home from home’ thanks to Penny’s hospitality and attention to making any stay here very special. It has been lovely to come in the autumn (last visit was in the summer) and enjoy the cosiness of evenings by the fire. Also, the walks on the Common and the autumnal colours have been wonderful. There is lots to see and visit in the area, Sheffield Park, Hever Castle, Charleston and lots more. We’ve loved it all! Thank you Penny.
