Our stay at Kyoto Machiya Zeniyacho was absolutely incredible! The service was fantastic, and the amenities were amazing. Our host went above and beyond to ensure our comfort and enjoyment during our stay. He even organized a delightful tea ceremony for us. Additionally, he was incredibly helpful in guiding us through Kyoto, recommending restaurants and places of interest that we couldn’t miss. Considering our first time in Kyoto, we wouldn’t have chosen any other place.

Staff was very hefpful. When we accidentally triggered the fire extinguisher, they were very kind to clean up the mess in Machiya very quickly. Location is also very convenient, walkable to Kyoto station

We are at this Machiya on our recent holiday to Kyoto. The host Yuki introduced the place to us and we got to make macha together. It was a lovely place to stay and the outdoor bath was really nice especially as it is winter time now. It is located near Kyoto station and Gojo station. We also had the traditional breakfast which was delicious. Overall we were glad we picked this place for our stay at Kyoto and would highly recommend it!!

A fantastic place to stay. Tina did a superb job showing us the room and was super nice and helpful. The ceremony was fantastic! The room was flawless, the baths were incredible and amenities were fantastic. I will be staying here again and I can’t recommend it enough. Thank you Tina!

My most recent stay in Kyoto was a memorable one. My go to ryokan wasn't open so I needed to search. I spent a lot of time researching suitable properties that would accommodate both an active 4 year old and a baby. The 3 criteria were: 1) Baby and young kid friendly This property certainly met the bill as my youngest slept like a baby. It is common knowledge that babies may or may not sleep well especially in new environments. However, the room had good moisture and temperature regulation ensuring that baby slept soundly. Also, the machiya is on a small street with limited traffic so it was very quiet at night. Since baby slept well, mom slept well which was crucial as we were jet lagged. Lastly, this is an expensive place but not so expensive, delicate and rare that I needed to always monitor the active 4 year old. 2) Baths I love baths and this property has it in spades. One indoor and one outdoor. The outdoor one is the one you want, a little slice of heaven overlooking a private Japanese garden. Being private you don't need to worry about anyone laughing about your size. 3) Catered meals This is the area were the experience fell a bit short. Taste, presentation and portion wise everything was ok. However, more could have been done to explain the meals. Even a simple printed sheet with details on each item and dining instructions (which items to eat first, ingredients, etc) would suffice. To sum up, this property is definitely worth a try esp. with young kids.

We had such a wonderful stay at Kyoto Machiya Zeniyacho! From the moment we arrived, we were warmly welcomed by the gentleman who checked us in. Unfortunately, I forgot his name, but he was one of the kindest and most genuine people we met during our trip to Japan. He took the time to show us around the property and even taught us how to prepare traditional matcha tea. It wasn’t just a demonstration it felt like sharing a piece of Japanese culture with us. His hospitality, warmth, and passion made us feel so welcome and turned our stay into something truly special. The property itself was beautiful, cozy, and full of charm. We especially loved the bathroom-it was gorgeous and one of our favorite parts of the house! Staying in a traditional Kyoto machiya for a night was a wonderful experience that we will always remember. The only small downside was that the price for that particular night felt a little high, but thanks to the incredible hospitality and unique experience, we still left with wonderful memories. A huge five-star thank you to the gentleman who welcomed us and made our stay so memorable. He truly deserves recognition for going above and beyond. We would absolutely recommend Kyoto Machiya Zeniyacho to anyone looking for an authentic and unforgettable stay in Kyoto.

The location is easy to get to, but the beauty of the property is the property itself. The unit we were in was lovely and well cared for. The indoor and outdoor tubs were luxurious, the traditional breakfast was the perfect way to end our stay! Our hosts were lovely, welcoming, and thoughtful in the offering! We would highly recommend this ryokan!

Fantastic accommodations! We thoroughly enjoyed our time at Machiya Zeniyacho. It was perfect for two couples. Spotless, with impeccable service and some really nice bonus surprises. Very responsive to our questions. The breakfast was delicious, as well. We'd stay here again for sure.

The property was beautiful! The staff were very attentive and helpful. They have thought of every detail and even checked in with us to make sure we had slept well and didn't need anything. Each room had temperature control and both fridges had a supply of complimentary beverages. We are traveling and staying several different accommodations, and this one is by far our favorite.

It was so much fun experiencing the entire home. Getting to enjoy the solitude of a private outdoor bath with a garden was a highlight. Each room had its own climate unit to customize temperature comfort. Beds were plush and warm. Fridge was well stocked with cold drinks. Property was clean and well decorated. Would stay here again, great place to stay with a group.

Outstanding Machiya in Kyoto

From the welcome matcha to the helpful tips for the area to the comforts of the accommodation this was our favorite place that we stayed during our trip to Japan. There were high-end appliances in the Machiya and both baths were perfect for relaxing after a long day of sightseeing in Kyoto. There was a train only 7 minutes away. We took this to access the Keifuku Randen Tram line to visit Arahiyama bamboo forest and monkey park. The monkey park was fun, but a long hike up a hill. We enjoyed Tantanmen Ebisu Emmachi for a quick cheap dinner of ramen and fried chicken within walking distance from the machiya. We also visited the Gion district.

Incredibly relaxing experience

We were greeted by someone who was very helpful in explaining the property to us, before serving us tea. The indoor and outdoor baths are simply incredible. Was able to read in the bath outside while it was even snowing, and it was amazingly comfortable. The space is very large especially for Japan, with two floors including two bedrooms ( they will put out cots for you if you need more than the king size bed there). Otherwise the second bedroom is a large empty room with padded flooring. There's also a living room with a TV and stocked fridge, and everything inside the fridge (Coke, water, juices, beer, Saki) was complimentary. Highly recommend.

Beware - this house has rats. You won't be able to sleep because they will be scurrying through the walls 1ft from your head. This was supposed to be a ultra luxurious stay and accomodations were otherwise great but not dealing with a pest issue is a black flag against the host. Extremely unsatisfied.
