Immediately upon arrival you will experience peace, quietness and serenity at this Georgian gem, on the edge of Kenmare town, yet in an oasis of greenery, ancient trees and eye pleasing flowers.

Shelburne Lodge awaits your stay.

It was built to entertain and it has been a home to families, friendship, love and laugher for over 250+ years. Sitting on ~3 acres of lush grounds and calming trees, this manor house is ~2.5 hours’ drive from Shannon airport or 75 minutes from Cork airport. This is the oldest house in Kenmare, filled with old world charm and antiques. Just minutes on foot to shops, bars and restaurants, a short stroll to the sea and nature walks.

Shelburne Lodge (c. 1769) was built by and was the original home of the 2nd Earl of Shelburne, Dublin born Sir William Petty (FitzMaurice added later) (1737-1805). Around 1760, he inherited vast areas of land in the Kenmare area through his grandmother (Anne (Petty) FitzMaurice), a daughter of Sir William Petty. Later he commissioned the building of the town of Kenmare in 1775. He had a great love of the area and lived in this home as a young man. His city home was at St. Stephen's Green, Dublin. Around 1776 he entered politics and became a member of the Parliament of Ireland, opposite Trinity College, Dublin. He had a successful political career, becoming Prime Minister of Great Britain on July 4th, 1782 until March 26th, 1783. The Treaty of Paris (1783) which brought the conflict between Britain and the United States to an end was signed with US leaders - John Adams, Benjamin Franklin and John Jay among others. Lord Shelburne was popular with the US leaders and following the signing of the Treaty of Paris, a town was named after him, Lansdowne, Pennsylvania. Other areas in the US were also named Shelburne to honor his memory.

Shelburne Lodge is a charming (in town) Georgian country house. Close to fine dining establishments, five star hotels and many outdoor activities. Just 30 minutes by car to Killarney, Muckross House and Ross Castle. On the Ring of Kerry and Ring of Beara routes, Kerry Way hiking, biking, fishing and much, much more. Kenmare Golf Club is directly across the road. Croquet is available at the property, along with various boards games and playing cards.

The house was absolutely perfect for our family. The hosts were welcoming and very responsive. Everything we needed was there to help make our vacation memorable. The location was fantastic, short walk to everything so we did not have to rely on a car the whole time.

Our family of 17 celebrated a special birthday at this wonderful home. Even though it was large enough to accommodate all of us, it was a warm and comfortable place for all of us. It was within walking distance to many restaurants, pubs, grocery stores and golf course. Patrick and Victoria were always within a phone call or email if we needed them. I would highly recommend the Shelburne Lodge and if I could I would rate it 5 1/2 stars.

A Perfect Stay for All Ages. We’ll Be Back!

Our family, spanning ages 2 to 65, stayed at Shelburne Lodge for a week and had an absolutely wonderful experience. From the moment we arrived, we were impressed by the warm welcome from Victoria, the host. She met us at the lodge, gave us a full tour, and was always quick to respond to any questions we had throughout our stay.The lodge itself was perfect for a large family. Every bedroom had its own en suite bathroom, which made it incredibly comfortable and convenient for everyone. The home was spotless and beautifully maintained, and the spacious yard was a big hit, perfect for the kids to play and for the adults to relax and enjoy the scenery.The kitchen was a true chef’s dream, fully stocked with everything we could possibly need and more. Cooking meals together was a joy with such high quality appliances and thoughtful touches throughout.We absolutely recommend Shelburne Lodge to anyone looking for a special place to stay in the area. We’re already looking forward to our next visit!

Great experience - we loved it! We had 13 adults and two infants at Shelburne Lodge for a family reunion in July. We found this to be a great location for day trips across southwestern Ireland - and only about 500 yards down the sidewalk to the downtown pubs and shops of Kenmare. It is also convenient to grocery stores and a pharmacy. The lodge is a remarkable historic structure, accurately depicted in the photos on the VRBO website. There were plenty of bedrooms and baths to accomodate everyone - and all were first class with en suite baths. We had plenty of room to hang out in the two large sitting rooms, the office, and the dining room/bar area. With wonderful weather, we ended up dining out on the patio almost every evening where there are two nice dining tables with umbrellas, 10 comfortable outdoor chairs and 10 stools. There is a big working kitchen with gas cooktop, gas and electric ovens, microwave, air fryer, etc. and two large refrigerators. In addition, there is a large (8-burner) gas grill that we used quite a bit. We found the house to be well maintained and well-stocked with all the things one might need. The grounds were also a nice surprise, with flowers, apple trees and a fenced pitch where the kids could play. There are also several magnificent trees that one would be hard pressed to find anywhere else.Highly recommend it.

Great Location, Tons of Irish Charm!

The Shelburne Lodge is a quintessential Irish vacation home which was perfect for our large family holiday exploring the charms of County Cork and County Kerry. It is strategicly located near the Ring of Kerry. Because it is within walking distance of Kenmare, we were able to easily enjoy the many charming pubs, restaurants and local shops that are found in town. It is also conveniently located within minutes of three modern and well stocked grocery stores. The home dates from the 1700s with beautiful architecture and Irish details including a typical English influenced front door and entrance. The 10 unique bedrooms offered everyone what they wanted, each including an ensuite bathroom. There is an efficient, fully stocked, commercial kitchen where we were easily able to prepare many meals for our large group. One stand out, the house is carefully curated and fully stocked for a vacation that feels like home. This even includes having umbrellas by the front door for our use, since it is Ireland. The grounds and gardens are lush and draw you outside to explore the beautiful Irish country side.Victoria was very helpful and accommodating to our group and quick to respond to any questions we had.We thoroughly enjoyed a truly unique and memorable experience at the Shelburne Lodge.
