Tucked into lush tropical surroundings just steps from the soft sands of Waialea Bay, Ehu Kai is a charming two-story cottage designed to evoke the feel of a cozy beach treehouse. Surrounded by mature landscaping and flowering trees, this unique retreat offers privacy, tranquility, and an authentic island experience—all just moments from one of the Big Island’s most beloved beaches.

Inside, the cottage features warm cedar paneling, handcrafted oak floors, and generous windows that welcome in the ocean breeze. The main living space is located upstairs and includes a vaulted ceiling, an open-concept kitchen with ocean views, and a comfortable lounge area that opens to a covered lanai—perfect for sipping coffee or watching the light shift over the bay. Also upstairs is the full bathroom with a shower/tub combo. Sleeping accommodations include a private bedroom with a king bed, plus a sofa sleeper in the living area—best suited for children. Please note: Ehu Kai accommodates a maximum of 2 adults and 2 children, making it ideal for a couple or small family seeking an intimate, peaceful escape.

Guests enjoy thoughtful amenities such as a fully equipped kitchen, washer/dryer, high-speed Wi-Fi, an outdoor shower, beach chairs and towels, and a small lawn framed by tropical foliage. While open windows, ceiling fans, and gentle trade winds keep the cottage naturally cool, there is also air conditioning in both the bedroom and main living space for added comfort.

A totally unique property on the big island on one of the best beaches that has homes to rent.Mary Fox, the property manager does an excellent job as she has done for years.Although the house is charming and the proximity to the beach his close, be advised that this house has almost no storage place for suitcases, etc.

This is an older well maintained property with a peekaboo view of the water on a short path to beautiful 69 Beach. It’s one of a small cluster of homes on a private gated road just North of Puako. It was perfect for a couple, but would be quite cozy with others sleeping on the pull out in the main living space. There are stairs from the carport to the house with BBQ and laundry on the carport level. Well supplied, outdoor shower, full kitchen, built for breezes.

This was our 2nd time staying here and our 3rd time using 2Papayas, the awesome property management company on the Big Island. Each time we have stayed in one of their houses has been a perfect vacation, from the expertly stocked kitchens to bathrooms with big fluffy towels, and always available and attentive staff of 2Papayas. The Waialea Bay house is perfectly situated with a secret path to the beach, a wonderful outdoor shower that has hot water to wash off the sand, and private setting with beautiful flowering trees and foliage surrounding. It is simply our favorite place to stay on the Big Island and I’m sure we will be back. We came to celebrate our 20th wedding anniversary (got hitched here on the Kohala coast) and I was so sad to leave our little paradise. Thank you and Mahalo to Mary and Marley for providing such an exceptional experience. Aloha!🌺🌺🌺

Wanted this to be great, it was good

Overall, we enjoyed our time here, but a few disappointments mixed with the good: Pros: Really off the beaten path Perfect size for a couple, everything you could need Very close to a lovely shaded beach OK snorkeling (too murky for me, but my husband loved it, saw a sea turtle) Easy to get to Bed was soft, but firm Close to other homes, but enough foliage and ground cover to feel private. Cons: One of the weekends we were here was a holiday weekend and the beach was VERY crowded. The rest of the week days it was very quiet, but it is a public beach well known for the shade, so just know on weekends or the holiday it can be crowded. The description says there is an ocean breeze, but that was not our experience. I don’t know if it was a bad time of year, or if the foliage might be getting too tall, but there was absolutely no breeze at all. The air was still. With Hi 80’s in the day and low 70’s at night (2am), we really didn’t sleep… couldn’t sleep except from about 2-7am because it was just so hot the rest of the time. Overall, we enjoyed our time, but it was just too hot to stay in the house without a true ocean breeze or a room a/c. :(

Great location

We really could not have picked a better spot. Our host greeted us on arrival with cool towels and a lei for my daughter's birthday. Stores are close to stock up and the beach that has the best weather on the island is steps away. The beach chairs provided were used every day and the snorkeling and rope swings provided all day entertainment for our 10 year old. Lots of cool creatures and flowers to check out right on the property. There was a great library to cover your reading interests. Internet worked great. The place has everything you need for a great vacation.

Great location but house needs A/C

This house is located on a beautiful beach with very good snorkeling and swimming. Large colorful fish can be seen within 50 feet of the beach. The house is nice but small. Like many houses in Hawaii, it does not have air conditioning. We had trouble sleeping a couple of nights when the trade winds were not blowing. The house was hot and humid, even with the ceiling fans all running full blast. A small window A/C unit would have made our stay much more comfortable. The 2-Papayas staff was very responsive and helpful with tips on where to shop, dine, etc. They do expect you to do some housekeeping like taking trash to the transfer station. I feel like they should do that for you given the cost of the rental. You shouldn't have to drive to the dump on your vacation. Overall, we had a great stay except for the hot and humid house.

Great location! No air conditioning...

This was our first time to the Big Island and found the location perfect. The rental was well stocked and looked exactly as pictured. The only draw back was there was no air conditioning. Our trip was in July with 91 degree days/80 degree nights and humidity well over 50%. We couldn't spend anytime in the house during the day. I was hoping to take a nap after the beach and it was not possible. Some nights were okay when there were trade winds. Sadly, only a few nights had a breeze. They have many fans, unfortunately, it wasn't enough. A window or wall air conditioner would be a great addition to the bedroom. I would rent this location again, but not in the summer.

What an amazing place! Just perfect for our family!

We booked this home earlier this year for the kids' spring break. Everything was perfect for our family. The house is very well maintained and clean. The ownership and management of the property are great. Kitchen well stocked with dishes and cookware. Nice beach chairs and some beach toys for the kids from prior guests. Our kids are 10 and 8 and they had a blast on the beach and just relaxing at the house at the end of the day. The area the home is located is very private and quite. The home is surrounded by beautiful green trees and foliage that are filled with birds and butterflies. The beach is just a few hundred feet from your front door and is beautiful for swimming and snorkeling. We would stay here again in the future as we just fell in love with the place. Perfect getaway cabin!

Our stay here was nothing less than 100% fabulous. It started out amazing before we even got there when our host noticed our late arrival time and offered to have groceries delivered for us to have a late-night snack and breakfast foods available. Then it only got better with cold peppermint scented towels waiting for us to wash off our travels and have a great night sleep in the comfortable beds. My boys and I didn't want to leave - the proximity to the beach, the beach toys & amenities, the cleanliness, the ease of location to other fun adventure spots, the privacy, the awesome outdoor shower - the list goes on and on. Thank you so much for the most excellent stay!

Perfect

Wonderful place for single person or couple. Extremely well-stocked and very clean. Everything works and is in good shape. Only steps from one of the best beaches on the island. Lots of shade and sun so take your pick or move between the two. Even though no a/c there was always a nice breeze so not a big deal. Excellent company to deal with --very helpful, welcoming and always reachable. Late checkout was no problem if there are no parties coming in same day. Very close to some excellent restaurants.
