1880s Kominka - Luxury Renovation - 5 mins from Goryu - Rental Van Available

Tamaki is a kominka farmhouse from the 1880s, now renovated into a luxury mountain home. We sit on a peaceful slope with open views just five minutes from Goryu. A woodstove, underfloor heating and A/C provide year-round comfort. Our licensed 7-seater rental van will take you anywhere in Hakuba.

Three spacious bedrooms, one with ensuite. Extra sleeping available on futons in a tatami room. Our large kitchen offers stress-free cooking for groups. A private garden for outdoor dining and BBQ. Woodland walks are just outside.

The house is centered on a huge double-height living and dining area that is flooded with light. The living area has an Italian leather sofa, original ukiyo-e art, a central woodstove, a large sculpted Isamu Noguchi "Akari" hanging lamp, and a TV with streaming services. It is wired for multiroom audio with a Spotify account. A Fuji Medical massage chair is provided for ultimate relaxation.

Our fully equipped kitchen is large enough for several people to cook together. We have both pod and pourover coffee machines, a rice cooker, toaster and microwave ovens and a fullsize oven. We can organize supermarket deliveries for easy shopping. Meals can be enjoyed around our eight-seater single-slab dining table or in our garden. Barbecues, sun shades, and outdoor cookware are provided.

There are three large bedrooms. Our double room has a shower ensuite and a sun room connected by traditional shoji. Artwork includes work by Kawase Hasui and a framed tsutsugaki printed textile. The beds in our downstairs twin can be set up as king bed. Artwork is by Kusama Yayoi and vintage Japanese advertisements. Our upstairs twin can also be set up as a king bed. This room features original movie posters of films made in the Hakuba Valley. Our Japanese tatami room is set up as a lounge, but can also accomodate two further guests on futons. This room has antique shoin shoji and vintage oki-andon lamps.

Our main bathroom has two Shigaraki ceramic vanities in a live-edge Yoshino sugi counter. A 3m wide mirror sits below an orginal shoji vanity light. Our bathroom has a large hinoki soaking tub that overlooks a tsuboniwa garden with a large Japanese maple.

Our entrance area has a drying space for skiwear with boot dryers. Outside, we have an outbuilding set up as a ski and bicycle maintenance center. Ski tuning equipment and wax are provided.

The house is full of books on Japan, old houses, travel in Japan, Japanese art, and LP records. The house backs onto an extensive system of woodland trails for hiking and mountain biking. A short walk from the house provides open views across rice terraces to the main Hakuba mountains.

Free Wifi throughout. Two workspaces are available, with a printer on request. One bedroom is located upstairs, along with a gallery area set up as a music lounge and library.
Some rooms used for storage and an owner pantry are locked.

We have three guest parking spaces. Guests are welcome to use the entire garden. In summer, we have homegrown vegetables and berries available.

We are parents ourselves and welcome guests with children. Our two twin rooms can be set up as king beds as desired.

We are fully licensed as a rental car provider and have a 7 seater Alphard van available for guests with prior license confirmation. With your own car, you will have stress-free transport to every ski resort, every restaurant, every supermarket, every shop, and every viewpoint. It is vastly superior to public transport.

If you have any special needs, dietary requirements, late arrival/early departure, etc. send us a message and we will strive to accommodate you. We serve Tamaki exclusively and do not host other properties.

Due to local licensing rules, we have to charge an accommodation tax that is levied on a per guest basis. We charge this at check-in when we have confirmed the number of guests actually staying. For bookings where the price per guest per night is under 20,000 yen, the tax is 200 yen a night per guest.
