About this space
Ulysses Suites has just been completed inside the historic J. G. Schmohl building in the heart of downtown Galena, located at 213 to 217 S. Main Street. We have 7 suites and a beautiful lobby that are modern and luxurious, with lots of historical character and texture as a nod to its previous existence as the Grant Hotel from 1895 to 1933. Suite 204 is a European botanical themed room on the 2nd floor. It has a king bed and a beautiful balcony!
The space
The J. G. Schmohl building was built around 1850. From 1895 to 1932, Mr. Schmohl ran the Grant Hotel in this building. We have loving renovated this well-deserved building with a nod to the Grant Hotel from the turn of the century. We have 3 two bedroom/2 bath suites, 2 one bedroom/1 bath suites and 2 studios. Having a special family/friend gathering? You can rent the entire 7 suites that will accommodate 21 people. Ulysses Suites main entrance is at 214 S. Bench Street and is also accessible between 213 and 215 S. Main Street. Ulysses Suites has been awarded the Galena Excellence in Historic Preservation Designation in 2020.

Ulysses Suites was a perfect spot for a solo traveler like me! Clean room, beautiful decor, very comfortable bed & pillows, and a great little balcony for morning coffee. Instructions for parking & check-in were very helpful and I had no problem getting in. The location is perfect. It's very convenient to just head down some stairs and step out onto main street! I had to message the host and received a very quick response. I will definitely stay here when I visit the area again!

What a treat! This place is beautiful, luxury towels and bedding, great kitchenette with everything a person needs, and location to downtown was terrific! We loved the balcony attached to this suite and enjoyed morning pastries with coffee here. Pictures are accurate and Joan was easy to work with. Can't recommend more highly!

Beautifully appointed room, including a soaking tub. The building has two entry points; once you've checked in, we took advantage of parking in a nearby lot thanks to the Ulysses Suites management.

We stayed in the studio with a balcony. The balcony area is surrounded by beautiful hydrangeas and lots of greenery. The studio itself is beautifully decorated and immaculate. The bed was very comfortable. Location was perfect, right in the middle of downtown. Bath towels were thick and plush. Well stocked with shower necessities and kitchen supplies. There was even a small fan and clothes steamer in the room and umbrellas at the main entrance. Thank you, Joan, for the extra treats. We truly enjoyed your lovely place.

I rented this suite for a friend and was so in glad I did! It was perfect for her visit with a great location, fabulous lux sleeping accommodations, and a charming outdoor patio. Parking was convenient and the water provided for guests was the best. Great host and everything exceeded expectations.

Our stay at Ulysses Suites was truly amazing! The room was beautifully decorated, cozy, and inviting. Walking in, we were immediately impressed by how spotless everything was—the room, bathroom, and linens were immaculate. The attention to detail was remarkable, making our experience all the more enjoyable.The amenities exceeded our expectations. From sparkling water on tap to the complimentary breakfast at the bakery next door, every thoughtful touch made us feel welcomed and well cared for.However, the one downside was the quiet hours. While the property observes quiet time after 10 p.m., our experience on Saturday night was disrupted by late arrivals around 1–1:30 a.m. Their loud conversations woke us up, and just as we settled back to sleep, we were disturbed again at 3 a.m. by more chatter in the hallways. Unfortunately, this felt inconsiderate to other guests.Despite this issue, I would absolutely recommend staying at Ulysses Suites and plan to book here again on my next visit to Galena. Parking was hassle-free, and the convenience of leaving the car behind and exploring the town on foot was fantastic!

Beautiful Room and Great Location!

The room is beautifully set up and decorated. The balcony is perfect for coffee and quiet time. You can access the main road from a staircase in the “back” of the building and Bench St. from the “front”. Staff is onsite and very prompt in response. Overall a perfect stay.

Unbelievable Experience!

This was by far my favorite VRBO experience ever! The building itself was spotless, beautiful and perfectly located. The suite my friend and I stayed in for our quick girls getaway weekend was clean and extremely well kept. We were greeted with a small gift in the room. The smell even when walking into the building was amazing! Everything was branded (which was a nice touch!) and everything we needed was in the room and thoughtfully placed. I am someone who is extremely particular and detail oriented and I was absolutely blown away by how lovely this suite was! We will most definitely return. I don't think I could stay anywhere else in Galena!!
