  • "Yin and Yang" I was at Cape Hatteras last month to try and capture a sight of one of our heavenly visitors in the night sky - Comet Catalina. The comet is somewhat unique since this would be it's only ever visit to the inner Solar System before being ejected to interstellar space forever. It was by no means an easy target to locate and photograph in the night sky especially for someone who's never done that before. But this is not about my attempts at capturing Comet Catalina (although I did manage to view and capture it). After I was done looking at the comet, I settled by the beach next to this pier, one of my favorite places on the North Carolina Outerbanks, to hear the ocean's mesmerizing soundtrack. I still had about 2 hours to go before sunrise and so I was just sitting and enjoying the unseasonably warm winter in December and just looking at the stars, Venus, Jupiter and Mars in the night sky. I suddenly noticed this big cloud about 5 minutes in streaking just below bright Venus. On a hunch, I decided to capture an image to see what the cloud looked like and a short 15 second later, I saw the start of what turned out to be one of the most perfect sunrises I have borne witness to. The cloud had started to just pick up the first rays from the sun, with about an hour and a half to go before sunrise. I love the juxtaposition of every single element in this image. The fading of the night sky and stars with Venus shining valiantly as the sun comes back to herald the start of another day, the stretch of unbroken cloud over the hurricane damaged pier and the sheer beauty created in an otherwise damaging act of Mother Nature (the hurricane, not the sunrise :) ). This duality is what inspired the title of the image. If you're near the NC coast, this location is a must stop. It is close to the town of Buxton and the Cape Hatteras Lighthouse. This house was perfect for our family of 4 and 2 dogs. We absolutely loved the location to the beach. The house was very comfortable with lots of seating in the living room. The bedrooms were also very comfortable. We enjoyed the upper deck and the deck with the swing.

Police report of incident

We had a person enter the home un announced and no visible identification in shorts, no shirt and a nipple ring. He said he was the spa person and was not suppose to be there at the hour he showed up. I told them to leave and he argued with me and threaten to kick my ass. I called the police and have a incident report available. This person said he had our door code and didn't care that he walked thru our home and our teen aged daughter room. He did no knock or call and we were upstairs eating dinner. This disrupted our stay as we felt unsafe in the home knowing someone unidentifiable was in our home and threaten me. We want our money back. I made attempts to hear from management but was given an unacceptable apology. Management agreed that person was not supposed to be in the house and left us uneasy the whole week and didn't even get a call back til two day before we left. We are an emption wreck and had a very tense time staying in the home. Please contact us immediately for incident report.

wonderful week

What a great property. I've been coming to The OBX for as long as I can remember. My grandparents and parents both had ocen front properties in Frisco. My folks still own theirs two houses down (Breakers) which is why we rented Mermaids keep. My parents, brother and sister and their spouses and my nephew and my kids stayed over at the Breakers while my girlfriend and her kids stayed with me at Marmaids keep. Great week of surf fishing and beach time. Beautiful weather all week. Great property. Enjoyed the outdoor shower and relaxing in the hot tub in the morning with coffee or evening with a cocktail was an added benefit. Easy beach access. Great week filled with great memories.

Our stay at Mermaids Keep

Everything about this cottage is wonderful! There were many amenities including games, books, movies, a crock pot, etc. There are wrap around porches on every level and the views are very nice. It is located a very short walk to the beautiful beach. We were able to see dolphins playing off the coast multiple days during our stay. Shopping is not too far away. This is a fantastic home away from home. We have already booked our next stay and can't wait until next year.
