In the other direction, the path follows the shoreline to Castle Point and then along cliff tops towards Sandyhills. The beautiful Solway Coast offers spectacular scenery and wildlife, with a bird sanctuary on Rough Island, accessible at low tide and the RSPB Reserve at Mersehead, a short drive away. Local leisure facilities include sailing in the neighbouring village of Kippford and golf courses at Colvend, Southerness, Kippford and Dalbeattie. ‘World-class' mountain-biking opportunities with a stage of the popular 7-stanes and walks in nearby Dalbeattie forest.
The wider area provides plenty of sites to explore, including Sweetheart Abbey at New Abbey where there is also one of the oldest Corn Mills which is maintained by Historic Scotland and open to the public. At Castle Douglas you can explore Threave Estate which includes Threave Castle with its ospreys and Threave Gardens, all maintained by the National Trust for Scotland. While for the younger generation a visit to Ernespie Farm Park provides endless entertainment with both indoor and outdoor play.
