Upstairs there are two bedrooms The twin room has images of a "Setmurthy Herdwick" and the double a "Rannerdale Herdwick" both painted by a local Maryport artist with some of the original beams from its days as a chapel and a shower room with walk-in shower. The popular Cumbrian town of Cockermouth, birthplace of William Wordsworth, is just a short walk away from Chapel Mouse Cottage. In fact, the National Trust Wordsworth House is just a few minutes walk.
Your nearest supermarket and a couple of pubs serving great food and local cask ales are also a few minutes walk away. The main town centre is also easily reached on foot. Cockermouth is a thriving market town full of hidden surprises at every turn. It boasts a great selection of pubs, quaint restaurants, micro-breweries, local craft shops, independent coffee houses, delicatessens, speciality shops and of course, well known retailers and branded stores too. If you like culture, Kirkgate Arts shows movies, arts and drama. Fancy a swim? The leisure centre is also nearby as well as local cycle hire. You’ll also find the famous Jennings Brewery nestled beneath the castle walls where the River Derwent and River Cocker meet.
Cockermouth is on the border of the Lake District National Park, so whether you like the rugged adventure of the mountains or the serenity of the seaside, you’ve got the best of both worlds. You’re also within easy reach of some glorious lakes. Take a 5 mile drive to Bassenthwaite Lake at the foot of the Skiddaw range for fantastic walks, woodland, wildlife and watersports. You’ll also find the Lakes Distillery offering tasting tours as well as the Lake District Wildlife Park just 6 miles away. The popular town of Keswick is 14 miles away and can be reached in about 20 minutes. For walkers and cyclists, you’ll love the route through Whinlatter Forest Park, or continue down the valley to Buttermere which boasts stunning panoramic scenery. Whilst staying at Chapel Mouse Cottage if your passion is fishing, take advantage of the fishing rights on the River Derwent that are owned by the family. The River Derwent is a highly sought after river amongst anglers providing rich pickings of salmon and trout. As long as you have a National Rod Licence you may fish on the family’s beat. Beach 12 miles.
