"Staff are exceptional - friendly, kind, helpful. There's nothing fancy about the place, but nothing fancy is needed, given the surroundings. I especially enjoyed my balcony with the fan. Breakfast is decent and it's only a 20 min walk to the orangutan rehab centre and 5 mins to the rainforest discovery centre."

"I loved this unique hotel, it was a tick off the bucket to stay in the rainforest! The staff are so friendly and the food is excellent and great value for money. It is very easy to get to the animal centres and I was still able to access the internet so could order grab taxis. I’d definitely recommend bringing bug spray! 100% would recommend, where else can you stay in the rainforest?!"

"One night stay before heading to the Kinabatangan River. Easy walk to the Orangutan + Sunbear rehab centres (both amazing). Was a long walk to my room with many uneven steps along the boardwalk without any offer of help with my bags. I felt reception was quite poor - check in at 3pm and i arrived around 10.40 - was told I could put my bags down the end until check in but no further advice, but if I had rushed could have made the morning session with orangutans (I arrived just after 11 and was...

"Friendly staff"

"Nice enough room, great location and excellent staff, comfy bed, only issue was a bad smell that came from the drains, the staff were quick to spray the drains for us but it only temporarily masked the smell. Didn’t affect our stay massively but would have been nice to not have an odour. Would still recommend for a short stay in sandakan!"

"The hotel and the room was very old and should be renovated urgently. The fridge was not clean and there was no shampoo in the shower. Staff is very kind and helpful. The location was not that good, because there were only local restaurants nearby. The price was ok for all that. "

"This place hasn’t been touched since the mid 1980s - thick dust and cobwebs everywhere, and the entire property smells like it hasn’t seen fresh air for decades, including the room. I would encourage any tourists to avoid Sandakan in general, as there’s nothing to do, and just base yourself in Sepilok. If you have to stay in Sandakan, only stay here as a last resort."

"It's a piece of luxury in an interesting place - don't let the exterior building fool you. You can be walking into another world in Sandakan and Hotel Sandakan is a sanctuary amongst it. The staff emulate the local Sabahan hospitality and friendliness, I will stay again next time."

"There are improvements being carried out, which will make a difference in the future. We were unable to get the advertised wifi at all, despite the router being reset many times. This was annoying. On four occasions we had random people enter our room without knocking, which was not okay. Once guy even got cross with us and said we should have locked the door. "For the area of Sandakan that this hotel is in this is a pretty good option if you really have to stay here! I would not recommend the area at all. The staff here were very attentive and friendly. The room was adequate but the pillows were horrendous! Just lumpy lumps of hard sponge!
