From the check in experience to the rooms, this is not a 4 star hotel.
The hotel is incredibly dated. The 3 seats in the lobby looked as though they had been there from its construction. When they say 2pm is check in, they mean it. We were asked to wait at 1:55 for 5 minutes. The room was musty, dark and damp smelling. Unfortunately the window frames on 2/3 of the small (less than a foot wide) windows were rotten and unable to open to let any air in. The room was hot and there was zero way to cool it down. Carpet, curtains and soft furnishings were stained and torn, they again looked like the lobby furniture, possibly there from construction? The room was incredibly dark. There was no natural light (and it was actually sunny in Scotland on our stay!). Turing every light on in the room and it still felt like midnight. The furniture was dated and in poor condition. The stand alone wardrobe couldn’t fit clothes inside with the extra pillows and ironing board shoved in which then meant the already small room became cluttered when clothes were unpacked as everything else had to be taken out. The restaurant on site never had a member of staff on hand which meant searching for someone to order a coffee (around 12pm) was a chore and we felt like a burden to the staff we did find.
The hotel is centrally located, with very little sound proofing, which meant on the weekend it was very loud until after 2am with the nightclubs and patrons gathering on street.
Bed was fine.
