"Clean comfortable room, good choice for breakfast."

"Very dated, poor workmanship, dirty even though cleaners supposedly came a few hours before we got there. Stains, dust, marks and bathroom sink full of dirt, mirrors with water stains and toothpaste stains. Toilet dirty horrendous! Room was very big but poor. Central heating not working, TV most basic channels like ITV etc not available. TV so high, causing neck pain. Switches/sockets upside down and one by radiators.. Could not wait to get out. Sent several emails to management with...

"The first room we were given smelled of steel cigarettes smoke and some sort of sickly sweet antiseptic. You can't open the windows to air the place out so we asked for an alternative room. The bed was incredibly uncomfortable and the sofa bed was well past its best being very saggy indeed. The breakfast was on a par with your average rep motel. Stuff were helpful if a little clueless."

"A power cut all day meant that the hotel had to rehouse us at a local hotel. It took hours of time and was a huge inconvenience. The staff were as helpful as possible, but I am pursuing the issue with Novotel."

"Booked this hotel for its location and being able to bring my dog. Room was clean and spacious. Good selection of food available."

"Clean, tap broken in bathroom"

"The hotel has a wonderful ambience , probably created by the staff who are extremely helpful and friendly, as well as hard working. The cleanliness and efficiency is created by this commitment shown by the personell"

"Lovely comfortable clean room with comfy beds. Good food especially breakfast. My only very minor personal quibble is only tinned mushrooms-much prefer fresh."

"Great value for money. Excellent breakfast just no uncooked option ie fruit ,cereal or yoghurt. Quiet at night. Brilliant staff. Room a bit tired ours could have done with a refresh."

"Lovely place to stay, temperature can be controlled in the room and bathroom which was great as the weather was freezing. Rooms are lovely, thought has gone into them. Food isn’t cheap if you dine there, but it was tasty."

"The hotel overall was good, it was clean and the staff where good. The room was clean, and the bathroom was clean. The bed was terrible, creaking bed/headboard, the pillows offered no support and the mattress was uncomfortable. Bar was good, breakfast was really good."

"I found it deeply disturbing that some guests were permitted to sit in the foyer, lounge and breakfast room in their pyjamas and moreover, to discover that this practice is acceptable with Mercure St Helens, Merseyside. All of which made our stay an uncomfortable one."

"Stayed here while visiting family. Really pleasantly surprised by the size of the suites and the bed was very comfy. The whole property looks a little dated but I can’t deny we were very comfortable, the room was clean, and the staff were all friendly and helpful. It was also very reasonably priced in my opinion. Would be very happy to stay here again."

"This IS a good value property but a bit away from the centre which may suit some people The room was spacious and whilst some people may find it a bit irksome to ask security to let you out and in - it does make the place very secure My only real issue is having two single beds pushed together as a double - it rarely results in a sound sleep - and didn’t here with pretty low grade mattresses Would I stay again - maybe if visiting away from the centre"

"We had an okay stay, think the rooms could do with having better heating facilities and perhaps breakfast to be included in the price but all in all, it was ok."
