Pulling up to the Riu, the outside looks almost as if they took over a prison compared to the properties adjacent. That said, the reception area was quite nice, as was the rest of the interior of the property, including the rooms, which were nicer than expected! The food at this resort was... lacking. But it's also on the budget end of the all-inclusive package programs, so at the price it's offered for, it wasn't outside the realm of expectation too badly. Terrible coffee at breakfast, but a decent bloody mary. A relatively quick omelette station but less-than desirable Mexican breakfast favorites (chillaquilles, chorizo and eggs, breakfast burritos). We were surprised to have name-brand liquor bottles in our room upon arrival but then were bummed to find no snacks in the room at all, only drinks in the fridge (which was nice! XX beer, Pepsi (and diet), 7 up, tonic, soda water), and large bottles of water were an added plus. As a chef, some might think I'm picky and snobby about the food. I'm not, but I was disappointed in the QUALITY of the ingredients. Breakfast sausages felt like they were 99% filler starches, breakfast breads and pastries were cardboard. The best food in the joint that we tried was at the Cappuccino bar (the green juice, cups of diced fruit in the morning, iced lattes in the afternoon, and we got fries from the snack shack by the pool multiple times a day, always hot, never stale, to match the snack shack tacos (which were great!)
