Really bad experience. First, the check-in time was 10:00 AM - 10:00 PM, we already confirmed we will be there before 10:00 PM but the staff kept on reminding and disturbing us in uncomfortable tone. We ended up being there at 9:30 PM to check-in and the Indian guy didn’t let us get the room because we are not enough 21 while we just followed what Expedia said (minimum check-in age is 18 years old). He was threatening us that

Our stay was nice, We have stayed here a few times. When we stay here we get a one bed private room with shared bathroom. We love that there is a full kitchen for us to use, we enjoy being able to make our own meals. The room is a little on the small side and is literally just a bed in a room with no other furnishings, no table or tv.... Just a bed and a window that is located inside the building and across from another rooms window. The bathroom is nice and typically clean with plenty of hot water. The gentleman in the office is very nice. BE SURE TO READ THE INFORMATION THEY SEND YOU! CHECK OUT IS 10 AM SHARP! Also they require a $20 cash deposit for the rooms key card, don't loose the card, and you get your deposit back when you check out.

⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Outstanding Stay – Special Thanks to Nick at The European Hostel I had an amazing experience at The European Hostel in San Francisco, and I want to give a special mention to Nick at the front desk. From the moment I arrived, Nick greeted me with genuine warmth and professionalism. He doesn’t just do his job—he goes above and beyond to make every guest feel comfortable, safe, and welcome. Nick is always available to help with anything—local tips, quick check-ins even late night, special arrangements, or just a friendly conversation after a long travel day. His positive energy truly sets the tone for the entire hostel. You can feel that he cares about people, not just reservations, and that makes a huge difference. The hostel has a great community vibe, and Nick plays a big role in that. He manages everything smoothly and with a smile, even when things get busy. It’s rare to find someone who combines professional efficiency with kindness and personal attention, but Nick does exactly that. Great place not gonna lie and I’ve learned my lesson on reading reviews but the that runa this place even tho he did exactly what the reviews say he did let me stay and was somewhat of understanding. Like I said not a bad place to stay. It was kept clean and the surrounding area even tho it has its troubles not a terrible area just make sure you are not alone and/or don’t bother anyone.

This youth hostel has a low rating but I've stayed more than 7 nights without any issues. Its centrally located and I always have a clean bed to sleep in. The manager is super nice and knows the area well. Always have some cash as he does charge a refundable cash deposit.

Manager was extremely rude, when I went to check out and give the key back he physically blocked me and started yelling at me and told me I had to wait for him to review security footage to make sure I had not taken a pair of his disgusting sheets, which I pointed at were on the floor in front of him. The disgusting hotel is only rivaled by the rudeness of the manager.

Disgusting place smells and looks like it hasn’t been cleaned since it was built over 100 years ago. It reeks of smoke and indian food. The walls have holes and are dirty and scratched. The bathroom are a messy and have poop on the walls. Ironic since he never stops mentioning that this is his property and that we need to keep everything looking good. Customer service is horrible. The owner is so full of himself and whenever you try to point something his excuse is always that they’re not or that the building is old. Also terrible area homeless crackheads everywhere and it never feels safe.

The European Hostile is okay. It's average. A Meh if maybe. It's quiet and I got some good sleep. However the bathrooms need a lot of work. If one shower doesn't have hot water then you have to go into another shower that has hot water, problems with the light staying on, and a overflowing waste basket. No this place isn't big and fancy but it's a hole in wall place where it's quiet as soon as you get inside and place to get some sleep. It's worth its salt.

I had a very good experience at The European Hostel and would like to appreciate both the front desk and the day and night cleaning staff. They work hard every day to keep the place as clean and comfortable as possible for all guests. I’ve seen some reviews saying the hostel is “smelly” or “dirty.” Yes, sometimes you might notice this—but it’s important to understand why. This is an economical shared hostel, and you’re sharing a room with 4 or 6 other people. Many guests are travelers or people working from out of state, and sometimes they don’t have the time to do laundry or organize their belongings until their days off. The front desk manager reminds them multiple times to keep things tidy, but he can’t force them if they truly don’t have the time—he respects their situation. At the end of the day, you’re paying around $25 per night, so you can’t expect 5-star hotel facilities. What you can expect is a safe, budget-friendly place to stay, with a management team that works hard to accommodate everyone and make the best of a shared living environment. If you’re looking for a low-cost option in San Francisco with a team that genuinely cares for its guests, The European Hostel is a solid choice.

My stay at The European Hostel was an excellent experience, and I want to especially recognize the amazing staff and front desk service. The facilities are well-maintained, the beds are comfortable, and the common areas are welcoming with a great atmosphere. One thing that really stood out to me was seeing the front desk manager, Nick, personally taking care of the property. If he notices something doesn’t look clean or comfortable, he doesn’t wait for someone else—he will sweep, mop, and tidy up the rooms and kitchen himself. His goal is always to make sure every guest feels good energy and a positive vibe during their stay. Nick is always ready to assist guests with a smile, no matter how busy things get. Unfortunately, I also witnessed times when some guests disrespected him or even threatened him, simply because they didn’t want to follow the house rules. These are rules that keep a shared space clean, safe, and enjoyable for everyone. Sometimes people also leave bad reviews without realizing that they booked a shared facility with specific policies they agreed to before making a reservation. It’s important to understand how much effort and hard work Nick puts in every single day. He treats the hostel like his own home and works tirelessly to keep it safe and comfortable for all.
