"Unsatisfactory. No kettle in the room—I had to ask twice. Restaurant service was slow and inattentive. The steak pie had very little gravy, and the same staff member was on her phone at the service counter, so I couldn’t request more. No offer of dessert. The bedroom door emits a mini alarm when opened, which is irritating late at night. The walls are thin, with corridor doors slamming and disrupting sleep. "This was an amazing experience! These people have been doing this for 40 years, and have it down! Hospitality is second nature to them! Everything was lovely! They gave us the family suite so we wouldn’t have to bring our luggage upstairs. Hilary made the most perfect breakfast and it was so lovely to chat with her. Highly recommend this place for home away from home! Definitely going back again!"

"It's a lovely old hotel BUT... There's no lift and for me, age 77, the 50 stairs up to my room, and back down, were not easy to manage. The hotel, as at April 2026, is undergoing some renovation which made things more awkward and left a lot of mess and dirt around. There was no help to get suitcases upstairs. Having said that the staff were all lovely people and breakfast was good. The car park is useful but a bit of distance from the hotel and up a hill to get out of the car park and down again...

"The building is centuries old, so keep that in mind. The stairs are not always level, but they manage to provide modern amenities. The restaurant is a favorite among locals for good reason. And the House is across the street from the cathedral. So convenient."

Weeny downside, I had already paid via Expedia, my partner didn't realise, and when checking in, whilst I was elsewhere, paid for the room. Luckily he mentioned it later, and it got sorted and refunded. Would definitely stay there again, beautiful old building, and although a pub was very quiet in our room, ...
