Platja de Seaside Heights

Hurricane sandy slammed into the east coast with fury seldom seen in these parts. I live an hour inland, and I lost power for the better part of a week. When I finally got it back, I learned of the tragedy that had befallen areas to my east. Seaside seemed to get whacked the hardest and the star jet roller coaster was the most palatable image of the destruction, as the hurricane had pulled the pier out from underneath the behemoth. The houses and communities that had been leveled didn't resonate with as many people as the star jet, though they were much more tragic. Soon after seeing it in the ocean like a steel kraken, seaside heights mayor Bill Akers remarked that he'd like to see if it could be left there as a tourist attraction. He was roundly criticized for the comment, as the owners of the coaster would like to get it back into action and are trying to figure how to return it to its grounded location. In January 2013, a local man boated out to the structure, climbed up it, and mounted a flag. For some reason, they arrested him. The flag is still up there, and it seems like a good addition to me. It may be months before it's pulled out of the brine, but until then, as the mayor wanted, it made me drive into town. I surely won't be the last.
