Hudson Valley Retreat with Sauna
- Discover Athens & the Hudson Valley
Athens is one of those rare places that still feels like a hidden gem. Perched on the western banks of the Hudson River, this historic river town offers a slower pace of life that invites you to settle in rather than rush from one destination to the next. Tree-lined streets, beautifully preserved nineteenth-century homes, friendly neighbors, and the gentle rhythm of life along the river make Athens a place that’s easy to fall in love with.
One of the best parts about staying here is that you can leave your car parked for the day. From the house, it’s just a five-minute walk to the center of town, where you’ll find locally owned coffee shops, restaurants, bars, and the waterfront. Mornings often begin with coffee from The Roost before wandering down to the river to watch boats drift by. Evenings are perfect for dinner overlooking the water or enjoying a drink while the sun sets across the Hudson.
Despite its peaceful atmosphere, Athens has a wonderful sense of community. Throughout the summer you’ll find local events, live music, farmers markets, art happenings, and neighbors gathering along the waterfront. It’s the kind of town where people wave hello, conversations happen naturally, and the pace encourages you to slow down and enjoy where you are.
If you enjoy being outdoors, you’ll have plenty to explore. Rent a kayak and paddle along the Hudson River, exploring quiet coves and nearby islands while taking in views of the Catskill Mountains. The river is one of the defining features of the region, and experiencing it from the water offers a completely different perspective on the Hudson Valley.
For those looking to cool off during warmer months, the Athens Community Pool is just a short walk from the house and is a wonderful way to spend a sunny afternoon. The surrounding region is also home to numerous swimming holes tucked into the Catskills, many featuring waterfalls, clear mountain water, and beautiful natural settings. They’re well worth seeking out during the summer.
The Hudson Valley is known for its incredible outdoor recreation. Within a short drive you’ll find hiking trails for every ability, from easy woodland walks to challenging mountain climbs with panoramic views. Some guests spend their mornings hiking before returning home for an afternoon nap in the hammock or an evening sauna session.
Cyclists will find scenic country roads winding through farmland, forests, and small villages, while photographers and artists often discover endless inspiration in the changing light, historic architecture, and rolling landscapes.
Athens also serves as an ideal home base for exploring some of the Hudson Valley’s most beloved destinations.
Just fifteen minutes away is Hudson, one of the region’s most vibrant small cities. Warren Street is lined with independent bookstores, art galleries, antique shops, home design stores, wine bars, bakeries, cocktail lounges, and exceptional restaurants. It’s easy to spend an entire day wandering from shop to shop before settling into a long dinner.
Only eight minutes away, Catskill offers its own unique personality with galleries, coffee shops, breweries, restaurants, and access to many nearby hiking destinations. The town has become a favorite among artists and creatives while maintaining its welcoming small-town character.
The surrounding countryside is filled with farm stands, orchards, vineyards, breweries, cideries, and farmers markets. Summer and early fall are especially magical, with local farms overflowing with tomatoes, corn, peaches, berries, herbs, flowers, and countless seasonal vegetables. Picking up fresh ingredients and returning to the house to cook dinner is one of my favorite ways to spend the day.
Food lovers will appreciate the abundance of local producers throughout the region. You’ll discover artisan cheeses, freshly baked bread, locally roasted coffee, pasture-raised meats, maple syrup, handmade pasta, and beautiful seasonal produce almost everywhere you turn. Honest Weight Food Co-op in Albany is one of my favorite grocery destinations, and there are several excellent specialty markets throughout Catskill, Kingston, and Hudson.
If you’re visiting during the fall, you’ll experience one of the most beautiful times of year in the Hudson Valley. Hillsides burst into brilliant reds, oranges, and golds while crisp mornings invite long walks, afternoons at local orchards, and evenings beside the fire pit or wood-burning stove.
Winter brings its own quiet beauty. Snow settles across the fields and forests, nearby ski mountains come alive, and returning home to a warm sauna and crackling fire feels especially rewarding.
What I love most about Athens, though, isn’t any single attraction. It’s the feeling the town gives you. It’s sitting on the porch with your morning coffee while the neighborhood slowly wakes up. It’s hearing birds throughout the day and, in the afternoon, the distant sounds of children playing at the neighborhood park. It’s walking to dinner instead of driving. It’s buying vegetables from a roadside farm stand because they looked too good to pass up. It’s reading in the hammock for an hour longer than you planned because there’s nowhere else you need to be.
This house was built to embrace that way of living. Spend the morning in the sauna, cool off in the outdoor shower, wander into town for lunch, kayak on the Hudson, hike in the Catskills, visit a local farm, cook dinner with fresh ingredients, gather around the fire pit as fireflies appear, and end the evening beneath a sky full of stars.
Whether you’re visiting for adventure, creativity, remote work, or simply to unplug for a while, Athens offers the kind of restorative experience that’s becoming increasingly rare. I hope you’ll settle in, slow down, and enjoy this special corner of the Hudson Valley as much as I have.
