At Hikari House, a 20-foot glass wall folds away to bring the Mojave landscape into your living room. Set on five private acres in Joshua Tree, this wabi-sabi-inspired retreat pairs Copper Mountain views with a saltwater plunge pool, dining beneath century-old olive trees, and a sunken fireside lounge. Three queen bedrooms, including a glass-walled attached casita, welcome up to six guests.
The Space:
Inspired by the Japanese philosophy of wabi-sabi, Hikari House finds beauty in natural materials, thoughtful imperfections and simplicity. Textured plaster, Shou Sugi Ban accents, dark wood, vintage furnishings and warm lamplight give the interiors a quiet, collected character. Expansive windows keep the mountains and desert in view, while the open layout makes it easy to move between time together and moments of solitude. This is a home for people who appreciate good design, unhurried conversation and the pleasure of having nowhere else to be.

-Outdoor Amenities-
The outdoor spaces are designed to draw you into the surrounding landscape rather than separate you from it. At the edge of the terrace, the saltwater plunge pool looks directly toward Copper Mountain, with uninterrupted stretches of desert scrub and distant ridgelines beyond. Settle into a lounger between swims or simply watch the light change across the mountains.
Two outdoor dining areas invite you to spend more of the day outside. Gather beneath the property's 100-year-old olive trees for a leisurely meal, or eat on the back patio within easy reach of the kitchen and living room.
As evening approaches, head to the sunken conversation lounge and settle in around the fire pit. With five acres of open desert around you, the setting feels expansive, and the dark sky becomes a reason to stay outside long after dinner. Natural boulders, desert plants and gravel paths give the grounds their understated character.
-Living Area-
The living room is where Hikari House's architecture makes its strongest impression. An entire wall of glass folds open to the pool terrace, creating a seamless connection between the comfortable interior seating and the landscape beyond.
Sink into the relaxed sofa or one of the black leather lounge chairs, put on music and enjoy the view. Soft upholstery, vintage wood furnishings and carefully chosen objects bring warmth to the minimalist space without distracting from the scenery.
When the doors are closed and the evening turns quiet, the 65-inch Frame TV and Sonos surround sound are ready for a movie. Books and games offer a slower alternative, making the room just as inviting after dark as it is during the day.
-Kitchen and Dining-
The kitchen balances clean, modern design with the equipment needed to enjoy cooking at home. A central island provides space to prepare meals and gather, while the Gaggenau refrigerator, Bosch appliances, induction cooktop and convection oven make everything from a simple breakfast to a full dinner possible.
Coffee is its own small ritual here. Grind fresh beans from Joshua Tree Coffee Co., brew a pot with the Fellow drip coffee maker and take your first cup outside while the desert is still quiet.
One of the home's most distinctive pieces is its vintage 1970s bar, a richly carved wooden cabinet filled with cocktail and wine glassware. Mix a drink before dinner, pour a glass of wine for the patio or bring a nightcap out to the fire pit.
With outdoor dining areas on both sides of the house, meals can follow the weather, the light and whatever pace you've chosen for the day.
-Bedrooms and Bathrooms-
Hikari House accommodates up to six guests across three queen bedrooms and two full bathrooms. Every bedroom features an organic mattress and bamboo linens, with its own atmosphere and connection to the surrounding desert.
Primary Suite: The primary bedroom opens through sliding glass doors onto a sunrise-facing outdoor space furnished with an antique limestone coffee table. Surrounded by gold gravel and sage, it's a lovely place to enjoy the first light of the day. Inside, a dedicated workspace provides a comfortable spot to catch up on anything that can't wait. The ensuite bathroom features dark plaster, Shou Sugi Ban accents, heated floors and a walk-in shower.
Desert Nest: Sculpted, textured walls give the second bedroom a soft, earthy character. Windows look toward sage and olive trees, while blackout curtains allow for slow mornings and restful sleep.
Horizon Room (Attached Casita): The third bedroom occupies an attached casita just a few feet from the home's front entrance. Wrapped in floor-to-ceiling glass, it offers an especially close connection to the desert landscape, with blackout shades for privacy and a dedicated mini-split for heating and cooling. The Horizon Room does not have its own bathroom. Guests staying here must step outside onto the front patio and enter the main house to access the shared hallway bathroom.
The second full bathroom features a skylight that brings soft natural daylight into the space, complementing the home's understated materials and thoughtful design.
