Hyland Suite 103, Hyland Hotel

This newly renovated and locally owned property was the first hotel/BnB ever built in Palmer Alaska. It opened for business in 1936 with single rooms renting for $3 a day. We have maintained the historic colonial feel of the building while incorporating modern amenities to ensure our guests a comfortable and safe stay. The Hyland Hotel was officially listed on the federal National Register of Historic Places on June 21, 1991. We look forward to sharing a piece of Palmer's history with you!

Myles and Joanna Hyland were early settlers in Palmer, Alaska, arriving shortly after the establishment of the Matanuska Colony in 1935. Recognizing the need for lodging in the burgeoning community, they purchased land from pre-colony homesteader John Bugge and began constructing the Hyland Hotel. Joanna supported the construction by cooking and serving meals in a tent on the property while the hotel was being built. The hotel opened in 1936, offering single rooms for $3 per day and double rooms for $4, and quickly became a central hub for coal miners and other visitors. After Myles' death in 1949, Joanna continued to operate the hotel, later marrying local miner James Smith; together, they managed the establishment until 1966.
