Grandma's House in the Woods, 3/4 mile to Custer

  • Grandma's is my folks retirement home just south of Custer, a converted pole barn on five wooded acres, wrapped by another 5 acres of wooded County easements. Plenty of parking for trailers and toys, one 50 amp RV hookup adjacent to house. Quiet subdivision road provides a nice place for an evening walk, or you can stroll down to the golf course. Easy access just off the highway, about two blocks of smooth dirt road, and one garage bay available for parking in case of hail. A large front porch for sitting and relaxing and for watching the deer, birds, turkeys, and cottontails, or just sitting with your morning coffee or afternoon cold drink. Weber gas grill on front porch. Side patio on south side of house. Sleeps up to 8, dog friendly. High speed fiber optic internet, bedroom AC units, full kitchen, commercial W/D, lower level handicap accessible including main bathroom and master bedroom. Minutes to Custer State Park, Crazy Horse, Mt. Rushmore, Mickelson Trail just across the highway. One mile to restaurants, shopping and gifts, pharmacy, grocery store, service stations. Trail rides, fishing, boating, hiking, helicopter rides, and adventure vehicle rentals and bicycles close by. Property backs up to Rocky Knolls, our local municipal 9-hole golf course. Lots of room for croquet or badminton. Game table in loft. **(NOTE: I'm currently residing in my tiny home/camper 30 yards from house at NE corner of property while repairs from the winter wind and hail storms is ongoing, and while addition of upstairs 3rd bathroom and other major property projects are being completed. For 2026-2027 season, second bathroom is located a few steps into the garage and labeled "Outhouse." Construction is halted during summer season. My quarters are arranged for total guest privacy so you have complete run of the property, I can't see or hear you, I value my privacy too! I'm a commercial driver and am often away from home. If it's necessary to water porch plants or maintain yard areas, or for my petsitter to stop by, etc., I'll let you know in advance and/or ask your permission. I try to schedule any visit when guests are out touring for the day. I do NOT enter the house unless the guest asks me to do so.)**

We had a nice time at “Grandma’s House in the Woods”. It was quiet and peaceful. Perfect for an evening of relaxing after a long day of side by side riding through the hills. The house was extremely clean and the kitchen was well stocked with all the items to cook and eat meals. Laundry room was available to use. The host was very courteous and helpful and always responded timely to our texts. We highly recommend it.

Vicki was a great host at this property. She helped us with anything that would come up and was very willing to do so. This property was very clean, has a nice large kitchen and something very important to our family, pet friendly. Thank you for letting us stay at your house in the woods! :)

Very nice property, very suitable for bikers as well with ample garage space for several bikes. We grilled every night on a very nice BBQ grill provided as well. We have booked for another vacation later in the year !!!

Grandmas house is the perfect place to stay on your trip to Mount Rushmore and all the attractions in the area. Prime location. The house was perfect and comfortable. I did have issues with checking in but that was not the fault of the host or the place. The host was very attentive and made sure we were comfortable. We will definitely stay there again on our return trip.

We had a delightful stay at Grandma's House in the Woods. The check-in and check-out process was smooth. The home was clean and comfortable. The owner replied quickly to any questions that we had and had a repair person on the property the same day to fix one small problem with the internet connection. She contacted me about one item I left at the home, and made arrangements to mail it to me. We enjoyed the amenities and the location was lovely outside of town in the ponderosa pine forest. Would highly recommend to other guests considering a stay.

This is an amazing property close to several things within the Custer area while still feeling out of town. It was nice to turn into the secluded area after a busy day. Seeing deer early in the morning from the kitchen and porch was also very exciting. The host was helpful, friendly, and easy to communicate with. Even prior to travel they were reaching out to ensure our stay was the best it could be. The property matched its description and beat our expectations. The washer and dryer worked well. The kitchen was clean, setup nicely , and we enjoyed the farm fresh eggs in the fridge waiting for us. The three sleeping areas upstairs with a bedroom on the main level worked well for our stay. We also enjoyed being able to bring our dog with on our trip. We had a wonderful time and would book again without hesitation.

Loved staying here! The property was beautiful and we liked spending the nights out on the porch. The kitchen and bathrooms were very well stocked and had everything we needed! We would definitely stay here again!

This is our second time staying at Grandma’s. It’s a great location just a short distance from town. All the amenities are as advertised and Vicki is a very responsive host. We can’t wait to go back!

This property was described as a 3 bed 3 bath space. There was only one full bathroom inside the actual house. The second bathroom was located in an attached garage outside the living area. There was no 3rd toilet at all. There were folks living on the property directly behind the house, so you are not alone there. We were in Custer for a funeral and the location worked out perfectly for us however. The host was attentive to concerns we had but a few problems noted were never actually resolved. Overall I wouldn’t recommend this property.

Very clean and great communication. When I booked the room the description said handicapped assessable and I also asked host. The bed on the main floor is not handicapped assessable (way too high). It was teh only bedroom on main floor that mom would’ve been able to use. My mom had to sleep on the recliner all 4 nights. Also the description never mentioned that the garage was full of stuff, the upstairs bathroom was under “remodel” and the host lives in camper 30 years away. Just didn’t seem very professional. Although the host was very nice it was very uncomfortable that she was right there with us. The property has three campers on it and quite a bit of clutter in the back. The garage door code was changed durning our stay without any notification or reason. Price was good and the location was very easy to get to and central location to all the sites so that was great.

Fantastic location. Great location for sightseeing and privacy. We enjoyed walking the dogs in the wooded area. Very comfortable and the hostess, Vicky, was great. She went above and beyond. Thank you for having us and sharing your Mother’s home with us.
