  • This is the headstone of Banner Elk, North Carolina. This elk has been in the town forever, but this past year the elk has been refurbished and installed as the centerpiece of the town. This elk frames Appalachia in the sense of this small town pride in the mountains. In the background you can see the historic elementary school and rolling mountains and once again the North Carolina pride of the state flag surrounding this elk even though about 100ft to the right there is another flagpole with the same flags raised high and proud. This is where every child in this town went to school in this picturesque location but as time rolls on is Appalachia move on too? #appalachianechoes

  • Throughout my childhood I spent so much time at this park. I always remember of thinking of it as the park in the middle of the mountains. What I never noticed as a child was how every single aspect of this park was planned out and put there for a reason. Likewise before studying the photographic image I had never thought about how we construct a image and its affordances and constraints. One thing I really want to point out in this image is that while we have this beautiful park there is a huge ugly pipe in the middle of the photograph. It is part of the necessity of the planning of the park, just like the frame is a necessity of an image. We sometimes want to forget it is there but it is a necessary part of an image and still has meaning. #appalachianechoes

Family Reunion

Four generations from five states. Ages ranged from 6 to 95. Everyone loved it. It was spotless, the kitchen especially well stocked and the beds really comfortable. Host communication was excellent. Everyone had a great time, from the youngest to the oldest and everyone in between. One note for the host would be to replace the worn out grill.

Perfect property for our size group. Plenty of space to hang out and play games, chat, eat, and just have fun. Rooms wer very spacious and loved the idea that most rooms had their own bathroom with shower. Location to the slopes was awesome. Only a 5-10 minute ride.

Cabin Life Deluxe

Our large group of 15 people had a great time at The Overlook Lodge! The place was clean, nice and spacious. All bedrooms were large and comfortable, most of them had ensuite bedrooms, which made it all very comfortable and easy. The enormous kitchen island could easily accommodate our entire group for dinners and socializing, and we didn't really feel like we lacked anything. The parking lot fit multiple cars and it was easy to load your groceries and gear indoors after coming home. Communication with our hosts was always efficient and pleasant.Breathtaking views from the bedrooms, easy to park, and to get both Sugar Mountain and Beech Mountain, and downtown Banner Elk. Extra plus for the super cute family of deers on the property :) I can really recommend this place for large families and groups!

Perfection

Our stay was absolutely incredible. The house was big enough for all 16 members of my family. The kitchen was enormous, we all enjoyed eating meals together. Every person in the house enjoyed sledding down the very large driveway. We had the best stay!

Thanksgiving Retreat

House was a good size for 15 of us. The back bedroom was so cold the family that stayed there didn't want to go to bed. Most bedrooms had no dresser, bed lamp, closet. Had to live out of their suitcases. Living room was right next to the 4 bunk room where the 4 little ones slept. But adults were talking or playing games and kept them awake. Views were breath-taking. And snow was a bonus. Thank goodness for 2 refrigerators and 2 washer/dryers. Just need another dishwasher as we were a large family and had to run the dishwasher 2 times each day.

Cousins’ weekend at Overlook Lodge

Once we got up the driveway (it had snowed and there was ice underneath), we had an amazing weekend. The lodge was really nice and very roomy. The views were spectacular, and the kids thoroughly enjoyed sledding, hiking and seeing all the deer roaming the area. Highly recommend it to anyone with a larger group

Amazing Stay

Friends and family gathering

This was a great place for our family and a few friends to stay. We did a lot of hiking and there were an unlimited number of trails to choose from within a close proximity to the property. Having multiple bedrooms with their own bathrooms was great for my married children. We enjoyed our stay.

Great for large family group!

I don't know where to begin. Everything was wonderful. Highly recommend! Communication with Todd was easy and painless. He is responsive and friendly. The house... oh my, the house! The location is easy to find with ample parking. I think we had 6 cars. Rooms are clean and plenty big enough. Having bathroom's off each room was so great. The kitchen was well stocked with cooking supplies. Highlight of the house is the LARGE island. We spent a lot of time hanging around it.. eating, talking, drinking, playing games. The house is close to restaurants, shopping, parks, and outdoor activities. If we are ever back in the area, this is where we will be staying for sure.
