SELF CATERING VILLA IN CANTABRIA - GARDEN - FIBRE OPTIC INTERNET

Extremely comfortable, very well maintained and very well equipped property with lots of space and natural light, suitable to stay at any time of the year.
Located right near the coast, east of Santander, in a small and safe Cantabrian village situated on the northern Camino de Santiago pilgrimage trail. It is surrounded by beautiful green countryside and gentle, wooded hills that look down to the sea at Noja.

Only 25 minutes from Santander and just minutes from superb beaches & the surfing towns of Noja, Isla, Ajo, Galizano, Langre, Loredo, Somo and Santona – a stretch of coast known as the Trasmiera Coast. Four Blue Flag Beaches are within a 5 minute drive of the house as well as picturesque coastal trails and important marshland. In 2011, the area was inaugurated into EDEN – European Destinations of Excellence.

This is an excellent property for adults who will appreciate the cleanliness and spaciousness of the house and private garden, the ample equipment provided especially in the kitchen and outdoors, the big basement laundry and storage area, high speed fibre optic internet and the ease of access to outstanding beaches, superb natural areas and tourist attractions, shops, local markets, traditional restaurants, bars and cafes.

Past guests frequently comment on the abundance of things to do nearby and how they often found themselves not straying that far and just enjoying the local area.

PROPERTY SUMMARY

Upstairs are 2 double rooms and 1 twin room plus a fully fitted bathroom. Beds are new and comfortable and there is plenty of wardrobe space.

Downstairs is a modern kitchen with fridge freezer, oven, electric hob, microwave, dishwasher, kettle, toaster, range of coffee makers (Bodum press, Italian stovetop and a Nespresso machine), electric juicer and more. Also a bright, spacious lounge with TV, DVD, sofa and reclining armchairs. Off the lounge is the dining room. Both rooms have French-style doors and offer views of the mountains and down to the sea less than 3kms from the house.

From the ground floor you access a fully fitted basement with laundry (washing machine, iron and ironing board) and a spacious, shelved storage area with beach gear for guests use.

Outdoors is a well-tended private garden with lovely tiled patio for dining and relaxing, garden furniture and a variety of mature plants and trees.

The house is centrally heated, double-glazed and has exterior roller-blinds ensuring a restorative night’s sleep.

SAFETY

For safety the house is fitted with both a smoke alarm and gas alarm and each floor has its own fire extinguisher.

IMMEDIATE AREA

Across from the house is ample parking and a small village square with and `boules´ area – bowling being a popular sport in Cantabria. Siete Villas – the local soccer team – have their small stadium in the village and a game can usually be enjoyed most Sundays after mass. Mass is said every Sunday in the 16th century village church; Iglesia de San Pedro. The nearest bar (500 metres), Rufinos, is a lively traditional Cantabrian `taberna´ run by the same family for decades. Here you can try superb regional cheeses, cured meats, anchovies as well as wine drunk from the `porron´ (traditional glass wine pitcher). The owner’s son, Marcos, is usually on-hand and is one of the Cantabrian Tourist Board officials who speaks English and can offer advice on the area. He also mans the local tourism office in Castillo and provides guided visits.

SURROUNDS

Beaches, shops, restaurants & bars are all within a short distance as is Santander city (25 minutes), Bilbao (50 minutes), Cabárceno Wildlife Park (25 minutes), Santillana de Mar (35 minutes) and more. Many activities can be practiced locally including rambling and hiking, multiple water sports, golf, horse and camel riding, fishing and lots more. There are several discreet naturist beaches in the area too.

FOOD & GASTRONOMY

Being a huge farming area, local produce is excellent. Noteworthy are the vegetables and pulses, cheeses, cured meats, fish and seafood especially tuna, sardines and anchovies from Santona. Dining out is very inexpensive with a typical 3 course menu with wine at lunchtime costing around 12 – 16 euros per person. Excellent choice of restaurants in the area. The Young Cantabrian Chef of the Year 2015, Ruben Abascal, has his restaurant `IBIDEM´ only 700 metres from the house. His tasting menu at just 38 euros (2021) per person will knock your socks off.

Wij hebben een heerlijke tijd gehad in dit gezellige en comfortabele huis. Prima bedden, heerlijke douches en bad. Een keuken met vele gemakken en een lekkere tuin. Ook beschikt het huis over een lekkere keuken, voorzien van horren en alle gemakken. Het huis staat centraal tussen de vele bezienswaardigheden, supermarkten, dorpjes en stranden. Gastheer Ken is een super gastheer die altijd bereikbaar en behulpzaam is. Ook hebben we vele tips, wandelingen en bezienswaardigheden van hem gekregen. Ken is een geweldige en super vriendelijke gastheer. Wij hebben een geweldige tijd gehad in een prachtig stukje van Spanje!!! Bedankt Ken en we houden contact !!!

Maison très confortable et bien équipée dans un village calme. Supermarché à proximité. Peu de restaurants dans le village ou fermés.. Notre hôte a été très réactif et disponible . Région très agréable et intéressante pour plages surf balades et visites.. Il y en a pour tous les goûts.

Funny how life works sometimes. We had our eye on a place closer to Santander, with a view of the bay, but unusual payment issues with that prospective host prevented the rental from going through. So, we looked further, and thank goodness we did, as we ended up with Plan B -- this perfect property -- as it was one of the most enjoyable stays we have ever had, now spanning over 6 different trips to various places in Europe over the past 18 years. 1. Ken, the host, was incredible. I don't want to promise his services in your case as it is not my place to offer such, as Ken's broad expertise may or may not be needed in your case, but for us he was like a personal concierge for our entire trip. I imagine site rules would prevent me from listing his travel blog/site directly, but he is the owner of same, and therefore has legitimate, pertinent, incredible, well-researched, and a deep working knowledge about literally everything you can think of ever doing in Northern Spain. All of his recommendations were spot on, he seems to be on a first name basis with nearly every Inn Keeper and Restaurantuer in Cantabria and beyond. As but one example, we had payment issues with a website to book tickets for the Fuente De cable car. We asked Ken for help, and he got us the tickets, with us reimbursing him directly. In truth, we have encoutered many incredible hosts, but Ken is the best we have ever had the pleasure to work with. Ken has set the bar as high as we have seen. 2. The property itself was exactly as advertised on the site -- actually, it is even better than as advertised. It has been completely redone, with all new flooring, wall coverings, paint, etc. The kitchen is fully equipped, and had every possible utensil, dish, cookware items, and appliances needed. Everything is essentially brand new, everything works and works well, parking is not an issue, and its location was perfect for all the things we wanted to do, and it is only 1.7 km from the sea, and there is even a view to the sea from the upstairs bedroom window. It was peaceful and is nestled in a quiet and safe neighborhood. 3. We had no issues, we have no complaints, and we can unreservedly recommend this property as one of the best possible choices for travelers in Northern Spain, if not all of Europe! Maison confortable avec petit jardin et terrasse dans le bourg du village. A proximité de toutes les plages de la côte de la Trasmiera. Permet aussi de visiter facilement les sites touristiques de la région. Une documentation touristique impressionnante est mise à disposition. Le propriétaire nous a communiqué régulièrement des adresses et astuces bienvenues.

The house was very well equipped,clean and easily accessible to the coast and mountains of the region. It’s situated in a small, quiet village next to a school and playground with some ambient noise during the day from holiday clubs but otherwise very peaceful and we were out most of the days so didn’t affect us.Easy parking. Easy access to supermarkets and markets within 2-3 kms. Ken has some great suggestions for local activities,restaurants and bars in his info booklet and was very helpful in arranging some of our activities when our Spanish / the systems didn’t allow us to do it. We loved the beaches in the area- both surf-type and swimming beaches and did some lovely walks with great views. The caves at Monte Castillo were well worth a visit but bear in mind the tours are done mostly in Spanish with minimal translation offered for non Spanish speakers which limits your interpretation but still worth a visit as mostly the caves speak for themselves. The region serves mainly Spanish tourists and as a result English isn’t commonly spoken/ written in restaurants which was very refreshing and made us try out our very limited Spanish but added to the experience. Overall a fabulous holiday in a very comfortable house, great host and only 25 minutes from the ferry either end of the holiday so no long drives . Would definitely recommend this place and would love to come back sometime soon.

Ubicación perfecta por su situación equidistante de muchos lugares bonitos de Cantabria, y en pueblo muy tranquilo. La casa, también estupenda por la distribución y tamaño de habitaciones y estancias, y muy bien equipada. Y para broche, Kent, una persona muy atenta a cualquier necesidad y una gran asesor de actividades, sobre todo gastronómicas. En Resumen, una gran experiencia muy aconsejable

We really enjoyed our first visit to Spain. The house is clean and spacious with a well equipped kitchen and is conveniently located for exploring the area, being close to several beautiful beaches and countryside walks. Ken and Belen were really helpful, booking a restaurant for our son's birthday, offering useful suggestions for activities and immediately sorting out the wifi when it wasn't working. Our teenage children particularly enjoyed surfing at Loredo and we had several tasty meals at local restaurants. It's worth noting that not many locals speak English, so we did struggle a bit with translating menus! The weather was quite overcast for much of our stay, but it was comfortably warm. It seems to be an area of high humidity and the dehumidifier in the house was definitely needed. We would recommend this property as a great base for exploring this part of Northern Spain.
