It is a more than 1000 year old former residential town in the east of the Free State of Thuringia, in the centre of the metropolitan region of Central Germany.Altenburg is famous for the card game Skat, which was invented here in 1810. There is an exhibition on the game in the castle and playing card museum.Leipzig's market square is just over half an hour away on the S-Bahn.There are also numerous wonderful cycle paths in Altenburg and the surrounding area of Leipzig.
