Description

Discover the real-life charm of filming locations used in the famed TV series Downton Abbey. Your behind-the-scenes tour allows you to visit the setting for the show’s exterior village scenes in Bampton, wander the beautiful old town of Oxford, and relish in the beauty of Highclere Castle.

Start on your Downton Abbey adventure as you head to Oxford—the City of Dreaming Spires. Walk around the stunning centre with its Gothic churches, chapels, and medieval college buildings. Afterwards, enjoy some free time and opt to grab lunch at one of the traditional pubs, or stroll the cobbled streets and learn more about the area’s culture.

Continue to Bampton, a classic British hamlet that serves as the central backdrop for the hit drama. See Mathew Crawley’s mother’s house, pass Downton hospital, and stop at the Vesey room, where the Bampton Archive is stored and various local exhibitions are displayed.

At Highclere Castle, get an insider’s look at the “real” Downton Abbey and uncover the history behind the walls that were built by Sir Charles Berry. Get a chance to view the public area, the glorious main hall, the library, and the sitting room—all featured in the award-winning show.

You also have the opportunity to explore the majestic castle grounds at your leisure. Admire the fine interiors, saunter through the scenic parklands, or indulge in a cream tea, before heading back to London with a copy of real-life countess Lady Carnarvon’s newest book.

The coaches (don't call them buses!!) on this tour are wonderful. It's the only way to travel. There was plenty of time in each place we stopped to see what was there. Listen to your guide and take your time going through Highclere Castle. You get there late in the afternoon and they close about an hour after you arrive. You can re-enter the Castle IF they're still open. They won't kick you out, but they will not let you reenter after a certain time. Don't rush, but also don't take so long that you can't walk the grounds. They are incredible. The trees a something to see. Whether you're a Downton Abby fan or not, it is a beautiful home, and it's astounding to know that people actually still live there.
